American Literature of Literary Analysis At a Glance: The goal of this essay is to simply look deeply into a text, or texts, making your own claims about its possible meanings, and supporting those claims with textual evidence.

To that end, I am less concerned with what claim you are attempting to make than I am with your ability to support your claims.

The American Literature of Literary Analysis Assignment

For this assignment, choose any text (or texts) from our reading and examine a possible interpretation of the subtext. In other words, look at the text and explain what the author may be trying to communicate to the reader: theme, character, social criticism, etc.

You may build and expand on ideas we discussed in class or come up with an idea all your own. Your essay should include a strong, affirmative thesis statement that explains the argument that will drive your essay. A short, 1-2 paragraph summaries of the relevant parts of the story, stories, poem(s), speech (es) and several body paragraphs that support you claim. Each paragraph should be supported by textual evidence.
