1- Young people played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Watch Ain’t Scared of Your Jails (1960-1961), an hour-long segment from the highly acclaimed documentary film Eyes on the Prize. Pay particular attention to the role of students in ensuring the success of the lunch-counter sit-ins, the formulation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the Freedom Rides of 1961.
Write at least one thing that you learned about the Civil Rights Movement that you did not previously know before watching this film. Discuss some examples of the role that students played in the success of these particular events in the Civil Rights Movement. Using some of the perspectives from the section in your book “Why Do Social Movements Arise?” why did young people get involved? Would the Civil Rights Movement have been as successful without the voice of the young? Do you think that young people today are as engaged as the students shown in this film? Why or why not?
