Just not movies or tv shows! please write at a sophomore college level thank you!

The task in this paper is to analyze the communication that takes place in your life using communication theory. To really make sense of the concepts and theories that we learn in class, you must apply them to your own life and really see how they work. The goal of this assignment is to increase your familiarity working with communication theory and to analyze how well communication is explained by the theories we learn in this course.

Communication Theory Event Essay Paper General guidelines

Your paper should be 7-8 pages in length, one inch margins, stapled, double-spaced, 12-point font size, Times New Roman). You do NOT need a title page. Use page numbers (upper right). Use proper grammar, spelling, etc. Points will be deducted for not observing the guidelines outlined in the paper. Upload your paper to D2L by the due date.

Specific guidelines:

  1. Think of a communication event that has occurred during this semester that can be explained using two or three communication theories we covered in this class. The event should be one you remember well and can thoroughly explain.

The event you will analyze may be any of the following: a televised debate, ad campaign (e.g., magazine advertisement, television commercial, etc.), personal communication (i.e., a significant conversation you had with someone), an interpersonal relationship, a novel youíve read, or newspaper article. Please note, television shows and movies may not be analyzed for this assignment.

  1. Organize your paper into three sections using the words printed in bold for your headings:
  2. The first part of your paper should describe the communication event that you intend to analyze (e.g., a conversation, a speech, a commercial, etc.).

Describe the individuals taking part in the communication event youíre analyzing. Provide enough detail so that the reader understands the context of the communication event. Make the communication event(s) clear to the reader, but you donít need to go into every detail of the event. You will go into the details of the event when writing the second section of the paper (i.e., as you apply the theoriesí assumptions and concepts to the specific details of the event). This first section does not need to be too long (note how many points it is worth compared to section 2).

  1. Provide a theoretical analysis of the communication event you selected.

For the second part of the paper, use two or three different communication theories (i.e., at least two, no more than three), weíve covered in this class. Clearly explain how each theory accounts for what happened in this event?

You’ll write this paper as though the reader/grader has never heard of these theories/concepts before. This will require an explanation for all theoretical concepts/assumptions that are applied within your paper (in your own words, no direct quotes from the book), to illustrate your understanding. Then, you’ll fully explain how the concept/theory applied to your communication event.

Your analysis should highlight aspects of the event that were both consistent with each theory and aspects that departed from each theory, if there were any. Your goal is to provide an understanding of the communication event illuminated by the theories you choose to apply.

Throughout your analysis, you will refer to details that took place in the communication event; however, this section should not simply reiterate your summary of the events from the first section of the paper.

  1. Conclude by commenting on the utility of the theories.

How well was each theory able to be applied to the communication event? Please explain.

Which theory did the best job of explaining what occurred in the event? Provide evidence for this assertion.

How can these theories be applied to events that take place in other aspects of your life? Please explain.

Include a reference page at the end of your paper in which you provide a citation for all sources used in your paper. References must be formatted according to correct APA format. You are not required to cite any other sources in your paper outside of your textbook and/or course lectures. However, if you choose to, they must be cited and included in your references.

Evaluation: Your paper is worth 125 points and will be evaluated using these criteria:

  1. Description of the communication event. /10
  2. Application of the theory to the communication event(s) /85
  3. Commentary on the usefulness of the theories. /20
  4. Clear, grammatically correct writing,

Communication Event

BRIEFLY introduce your communication event. This means introducing the characters, the scene, etc. Provide enough context for me to understand your paper. This is typically around half a page/a whole page and is worth very little points so donít get too stressed about this section. Do not provide specific details of your event (i.e., quotes, specific descriptions), save these for the theoretical part of your paper where you apply your communication event.

Communication Theory Event Essay Paper and Theoretical Analysis

Theory #1

Write the main assumptions from the theory. What is the main argument here? Then, list and describe each key concept from the theory. (Note: be sure you mention EVERY key concept from the theory). This can be as simple as: ìThe first key concept is ______, which means that _____. You need to be extremely detailed hereódescribe them as if you assume the grader has never heard of any of them before. This paragraph should focus on describing the theory, NOT looking at your event just yet.

After listing and describing key assumptions/key concepts from the theory, start another paragraph where you actually start APPLYING key concepts/assumptions into your communication event. Although you described each key concept/assumption from the theory in the paragraph prior, only pick the ones that make sense in applying into your event. You need to make arguments here as to why each concept/assumption offers an explanation of your event. This application section should be where you focus the most. One sentence will not be enough, you need to really apply the concepts/assumptions by providing explanations, examples, and details from your communication event.

You need to make arguments here as to why each concept/assumption offers an explanation of your event. This application section should be where you focus the most.
