Concertive control in the 21st century
This is an essay for the Organisation Theory class. The idea of the paper is to access the current literatures on how concertive control is operating in 21st century firms.
The title of the essay can be flexible. You can write about a specific sector in the 21st century, such as “how concertive control works in higher education institutions”, etc.
The term “concertive control” was developed by Barker (1993), when rules and bureaucratic offices are cut. The company in the paper decide to change their control method, by creating self-managing team instead of being normal bureaucratic firms. The control moves from management to workers, and workers develop their own control by negotiated consensus. The employees seemed to be satisfied because they are not told what to do, but afterwards, they found this “concertive control” even more stressful.
