Assignment 6.1 SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT
Purpose: The learning outcomes for this course prepare the student to be knowledgeable and capable of planning and providing Principles of Development-Based Education to young children. The following guiding principles of Development-Based Education are from among those adopted by: The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), (1988). The following principles listed for this Signature Assignment is embodied in development-based education that is supported by recent research studies that document how children develop and learn.
Principles of Development-Based Education:
1. Domains of children’s development-physical, social, emotional, and cognitive are closely related.
2. Development occurs in a relatively orderly sequence, with later abilities, skills, and knowledge building on those already acquired.
3. Development proceeds at varying rates from child to child as well as unevenly within different areas of each child’s functioning.
4. Development and learning occur in and are influenced by multiple social and cultural contexts.
5. Play is an important vehicle for the social, emotional, and cognitive development of children and a reflection of their development.
6. Children demonstrate different modes of knowing and learning and different ways of representing what they know.
7. Children develop and learn best in the context of a community where they are safe and valued, their physical needs are met, and they feel psychologically secure.
1. Students will integrate knowledge, reflection, and a critical perspective on early education through addressing one or more specific theories written within this assignment.
2. Students will indicate how young children’s characteristics and needs are met through the discussion of play as a viable centerpiece within a curriculum as well as a discussion of one or more theorists that address the importance of play and related activities that actually strengthen academic achievement in children rather than detracts from it.

Description of Assignment:
*** In a minimum of three to an extension of five (3-5) full pages,
1. Present research that supports a rationale for the value of children’s play opportunities.
2. Provide evidence to explain the rationale/belief for the use of play in developmentally appropriate practices for teaching and ensure learning for all children.
3. Reflect on appropriate strategies for including play as a means of teaching “content” to young children.
4. Present your beliefs/opinions about the importance of play as a means of teaching content. Be sure to cite your sources to back up your belief/opinions.
5. Include research that demonstrate the importance of social opportunities such as recess, sports, and subject areas including art, music, motor development, etc.
6. Present a critical analysis of the importance of the inclusion of arts and sports in the school versus the elimination of these by supplementing the school day with more seat time in academic study.

Reminder When presenting your opinion, correctly quote your references and thoughts of theorist to ensure that your opinion is not misaligned with a theorist’s original ideas.
7. Include information from current research based peer reviewed journals from 2005 – current date that value play as well as other areas including academics that help a child to grow developmentally healthy and well rounded.
