- Discuss 3 personal, parental or contextual factors that predict substance abuse in adolescents. Make sure that you “discuss” and not just “list” predictors.
- a) The chapter on coping with alcohol and substance abuse cites many research studies. Discuss one of the “AHA” moments you had reading the research. What caught your attention? Reflect how this impacted you.
- b) In addition, most of the studies cited primarily focus on the effects from parent to child. Alcohol abuse in parents leads to child/adolescent alcohol use/misuse. Other research, suggests a bi-directional effect. Explain what this means. What is your reaction/thoughts to this research?
- After reading the articles by O’Farrell & Clements (2012) and Lewis & Allen-Byrd (2007), present your idea of an effective treatment or prevention strategy that you would implement if you were working with substance abuse in the Human Services field. Your strategy can be focused on individuals (adult, children) who are abusing alcohol/substances or families that are living with the stress/crisis of alcohol/substance abuse. It could also be a prevention strategy/program that you could implement in a school or community. Please cite your response using your readings.
