Theories of Media and Contemporary Scholarship Students must choose ONE of the below essay questions. As part of your response, you must develop critical analysis and argument
regarding a contemporary media example, drawing on a critical theoretical framework.
You are expected to research
and analyse original materials linked to your chosen media example. Depending on your topic, this may include advertisements,
artworks, films, television shows, songs, social media accounts, or activist campaigns, etc.
You are required to deeply engage with and cite at least two seminar readings and numerous readings by media and communication scholars you will find independently.
I choose “Drawing on critical theories of media and contemporary scholarship, examine the societal roles assumed by
celebrities today. What are the consequences – for better or worse – of our celebrity culture? You may focus on celebrities’
social, cultural, economic, and/or political roles.”
