Format: Use MLA guidelines in formatting your document. Cite and reference a minimum of 4 sources in your essay and Works Cited page. 1 of those sources must be from an Academic Database.
Length: 1.5 – 3 pages (not including Works Cited Page).
Overview: Universal Basic Income, or UBI, is an economic policy that delivers a monthly, unconditional cash payment to any legal residents who opt into the program. The policy is typically discussed in the context of jobs becoming robotized or automated.
Essays should be primarily concerned with the possible negative and/or positive effects of UBI in America. You are not limited to economic effects. Your essay should be entirely original work. Do not use more than two quotes in your essay.
Intro/Thesis: Include a grabber, 1-2 sentences of background/contextual information, and a thesis statement that lists 3 possible effects (Example: “I believe that UBI will boost small business growth and improve mental and physical health, but will increase the national debt”).
Paragraph Development: Each body paragraph should be unified around a single, isolated effect of UBI. Include at least one piece of statistical evidence per body paragraph. Explain how that evidence supports your claim. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of that evidence. Include a transition statement at the end of Body Paragraphs 1 and 2. Provide a conclusion no more than 5 sentences that reviews the main points of your body paragraphs and reveals your opinion on whether or not America should adopt UBI.
