Average Cholesterol Intake Essay Paper and Nutrition Calc Project Instructions

Project Description:

For this project, you will use the Nutrition Calc Plus software that came with your textbook (or was purchased separately) to create a nutrition profile. Your daily nutrient intake and activities will be logged for 5 days and this information entered into the program.

You will then be able to determine whether your diet is balanced or if it needs adjusting to meet your nutritional goals (Refer to the Reports for the AVERAGE info for all 5 days and answer ALL the questions found in the “Nutrition Calc Project” file below.)

Nutrition Calc Access:

The textbook for this course is set up to be “bundled” with the Nutrition Calc software if purchased new through MCPHS; however, if for some reason you need to purchase the software separately, visit www.mhhe.com/ncp3. The first time you visit, select “Register as Student” and follow the prompts. Enter “MCPHS” as your school, as you may not see it in the list provided by the publisher.

Currently, the program is $19.99 for a one year subscription (rate can change at anytime). Please make note of your password, as I am unable to retrieve it. You will have to contact McGraw-Hill for password recovery.

Nutrition Calc Instructions:

1) Log your intake and output–Keep a complete log of everything you consume (and quantity) for 5 consecutive days. Whichever days you choose, attempt to pick days that represent your typical diet.

For instance, you would likely not track your diet over holidays or spring break, as your diet could vary greatly from normal. You may want to keep food labels so you have access to this information when you enter it into Nutrition Calc. During the same period of time, keep track of all your physical activity (or inactivity) for 24 hours each day.

Log how many hours you spend sleeping, eating, sitting, standing, working, walking, biking, exercising, cleaning house, etc. Each day of activity should equal 24 hours (1,440 minutes).

2) Input the data–Create a profile for yourself in the Nutrition Calc program and enter the information you recorded. Enter your personal information, activity level, 24-hour activity recall, nutritional goal and then begin to enter your logged food information.

For recording foods:

–Select “intakes” and follow the listed instructions:

Select the date the foods were consumed on the calendar.

Type the name of the food or part of the name in the search block and click “find.”

A list of foods will appear; scroll until you find the food you are searching for and click the “+” sign by the food.

Enter the meal at which the food was eaten, the amount of food you ate and select the proper unit.

Do not forget to add all components of a meal–for example, if you selected “cereal,” include the milk if added.

Click “save intake” after you add each food item.

Continue until you have entered all the foods you had on the first day of the diet.

Repeat this process for the other days by clicking each day on the calendar.

Tip: You can use the “My Database” area to add your own recipes or foods that are not found in the Nutrition Calc program.

For recording activity:

–Select “activities” and follow these instructions:

Add activities in the same manner you added your foods. Select the day the activities were performed and then type the activity in the search box. Like the foods, you will see a list of activities matching your search.

Select which activity best fits your search and the add the durations for which the activity was performed.

Continue this until ALL 24 hours in the days are recorded. Even sleep time will be added in.

Repeat this process for other days by clicking on each day in the calendar.

3) Create a set of reports and recommendations–Once you have all your data, you can use the reports function to get an idea of where you need to make adjustments to your diet or activity level, if at all. Based on what you entered, you will use the generated reports to answer a series of questions following these instructions.
