The Module
In this module the emphasis is on visual culture. We live in a world that is saturated by images, images from the far reaches of space to the sub-atomic level and just about everywhere between.
Images seem to have a special power over our lives, playing a part in the constructions of who and what we are and the ways in which we understand the world around us. With the development of digital technology, audio-visual media is ubiquitous in our everyday lives. Not only can we watch films on the bus, but we can make and distribute them too.
The module takes as its starting point the assumption that as future artists, designers and professionals in the creative industries, the production and consumption of audio visual media will play an even more prominent part in your lives. We will investigate some of the core theoretical issues that underpin the production of contemporary visual culture including questions of what an image is, how it works, its relationship to ideology.
You will have the opportunity to develop your individual research interests that arise from the issues discussed in the module as well as issues that arise from your own practice or professional fields. You will be encouraged to make connections between the ideas and issues discussed and what you are making in the studios or studying on your courses.
The essay assignment for this module gives you the opportunity to pursue your own ideas in depth and you will be encouraged to be both rigorous and intellectually creative in your approach.
Assignment. 3500-4000 word illustrated essay.
The topic for the essay can be based on one of the seminar topics that has raised questions or issues that particularly interest you. OR. A topic that has arisen from your own research or studio practice and therefore not necessarily discussed in the sessions.
