CURATORIAL PROJECT
PREMISE:
The act of ‘curating’ or bringing together works of art in a theme allows you to evaluate and interpret art in a critical manner. (SLO 4) You have the chance to explore and discuss the similarities of FUNCTION and CONTEXT between different SOCIAL, POLITICAL, ETHNIC and TECHNOLOGICAL periods (SLO 3). In writing the text captions for the show you curate, you develop an understanding and appreciation for the language of art. (SLO 1) And, you learn how to discuss art in historical CONTEXT. (SLO 2).
GOAL:
Your goal is to curate your PERSONAL ideal art exhibition using the world’s greatest museums.
STEP 1:
Choose a theme:
Your choice of THEME is CRUCIAL. It must TRANSCEND centuries. Be sure to think from RENAISSANCE through the 19th Century.
Come up with a theme that unifies the works:
War, Fashion, Plague, Travel, Family, food, animals, death, love, etc.
Hint: when choosing a theme, you may want to have a favorite work from class in mind.
STEP 2:
Collect works to go with the theme:
HOW?
A WIKI image search will work….
As will a Google image search….
HOWEVER, this is how you start. To collect your pieces you should then go to the museums that OWN the piece to get CRITICAL information on them.
