Enculturation, Rules, and Politics
Enculturation is the process of learning the “rules” of a new culture. For most of us that process occurs in the workplace, for refugees, that process is every encounter in a new home, culture, society. The film, God Grew Tired of Us, embodies all of these concepts. The idea of politics, the political structure of a group, was introduced in the Food Getting and Economics modules.

This module takes the topic a few steps further. All of us are at the mercy of political structure found in our government.
If you live in a democratic society you have rights and the people shape the rules of that society.

When a country is under the scourge of war and genocide the rules tip toward the authoritarian ruler. That is the case in South Sudan and the young men in this film are the victims of this political structure.
The Trump administration is trying to ban ALL refugees from the U.S. after viewing this film do you think that is a great idea? Do you understand who the victims are with such a policy? Do you think this type of isolationist policy is in the spirit of a country of immigrants? Keep these questions in mind as you view this film.

This documentary is used at every level of education from elementary school to university. Obviously, at our level, we will take a deeper dive into one of the areas highlighted on this National Geographic Education website (link found below). Choose the area you wish to discuss and provide examples either from your own life, the news, or other areas of the popular media as evidence to include in your discussion.
