Question #1:
Chinese factories have been notorious for egregious labor standards and violations in working conditions. Recently, two Chinese heritage journalists reporting for a foreign news site went undercover to investigate working conditions at Hongfung Industries, a textile manufacturer which provides clothing for large brands like Abercrombie to Kohl’s. According to the report, not only were workers at the plant poorly paid, but they were also forced to work overtime. Embarrassed by the story surfacing in international news, the major retailers start to pressure Hongfung Industries to respond to the allegations and conduct an audit of the factory in question. HongFung Industries instead file a defamation lawsuit against the two journalists and tell their retailer the audit is unwarranted as their most recent audit, conducted by the plant, showed no violations. International pressure is mounting and the reporters are now being defended by Reporters without Borders, which is also increasing more coverage of the story and impacting sales and stockholder confidence.
Assume you are one of the major retail brands that is caught in the middle. On one hand you are reliant upon the Chinese factory for producing your clothes, while on the other you are taking a beating in court of public opinion. Should you be held responsible for ensuring that your suppliers are safeguarding the basic rights and dignity of their employees? How can you influence the situation towards a mutually beneficial resolution that will restore consumer and shareholder confidence while not adversely impacting your supply chain needs?
