Groups concept on anomie
Emile Durkheim wrote frequently about the concept on anomie – or the sense of “normlessness” that can occur when we become disconnected from social bonds and experience and/or an increased pace of change. It’s easy to argue that the vendors are in a near constant state of “normlessness”. Many of the vendors are unhoused, and engage in high-risk behaviors, like substance use. Despite this, others may argue that the vendors remain protected from anomie by their commitment to each other, and their collective sense of purpose. What do you think?
In a 400 word response, address the following:
- In what ways are the street vendors protected from a sense of anomie?
- In what ways are the street vendors at greater risk for anomie?
- Where can we see examples of this?
- Are the risks and protections different, vendor to vendor?
