How do language disorders affect a child’s social interactions
Many rules must be applied correctly if effective communication is to occur. We often don’t think about these rules until something “goes wrong.” A student with a language disorder has difficulty mastering these rules, which can lead to communication breakdowns. These breakdowns occur with receptive and expressive language, as well as with pragmatics. The term pragmatics refers to the appropriate use of language in social contexts. Many students with language disorders who have trouble with pragmatics may be challenged by language-based social interactions. Listen as Dr. Lydia Soifer explains pragmatics.
