During middle childhood, children develop qualities of emotional intelligence as described by Daniel Goleman. This phenomenon is made possible through the proliferation of connections between the lower brain and the evolving prefrontal cortex. Thus emotions, such as fear and anger transmitted through the amygdala (emotional center) are transmitted to the neo cortex where they may be mitigated or controlled through executive functions such as reason, mindfulness, etc..
