The photo by Nadar uses lighting to cast shadows in a way that creates directional force to push the viewer to the woman’s face. I like this photo more than the Julia Jackson photo because it has a softer more beautiful feel. The Julia Jackson photo also uses lighting to cast shadows and create directional force pushing the viewer to the woman’s face, but the tone of the photo is rather harsh because of the lighting and less beautiful as a result. I think both photos have merit, however I like the Sarah Bernhardt photo more, because I feel like I am being brought in instead of pushed away. The photos do both use lighting in generally the same way, as they use it to create directional force bringing the viewer to the faces of the women. I do think the value of the lighting is used more in the Sarah Bernhardt photo though because it is using the shadows from the light to keep the viewer looking at the woman’s face even though it shows more than the face in the photo.
