Picture Book Analysis – Literature for Young Children
PICTURE BOOK: Blizzard By John Rocco
Using concepts discussed in class and referred to in the course textbook, include all of the following in your paper, providing detailed explanations and specific examples from the book you are analyzing. Your paper should be approximately seven to ten pages in length.
I recommend that you use headings for each section of your paper.
Genre and Literary Elements. Identify the genre of the book you selected and explain your choice. Your response should show that you understand the effect of the author’s use of language and technique on a text and reader. Artistic/Visual Issues. Analyze, evaluate, and discuss the art in your selected picture book, including a description and/or identification of the artistic media, style, and visual elements used by the artist/illustrator. Evaluate any distinctive elements of book format and design. Be sure to fully explain your response, using details and specific examples from the book.
Relationship between Text and illustrations. Analyze, evaluate, and discuss the way the words and the pictures work together to tell the story. Be sure to fully explain your response, using details and specific examples from the book.
Overall Effect. What is your critical opinion of the book as a whole? Explain your response in detail, using specific examples from the book. How well do you think the book would appeal to its intended audience?
Presentation/Composition. Your paper should be well written, cohesive, well structured, free of distracting errors, and consistently use correct APA or MLA style. All major points should be supported with detailed explanations and specific and detailed examples from the book you are analyzing.
