Building on the observations you presented about the formal qualities of the work in the previous essay, you’ll expand your discussion to contextualize the work within the time and place it was made—its art historical period. (You may select a work other than the one you originally wrote about, if you wish.)
Assuming you’re writing about the object you studied for your formal analysis, you should already be familiar with the basic facts about it (artist name, title, date, period, materials). Your essay should describe the key features of the period to which your object belongs, such as French Rococo or American Romanticism. If you’re not sure of this, consider the works displayed in the gallery alongside your work; this should give you a sense of the artistic period. You’ll have to describe the major stylistic trends of art for the period and place of origin for the artwork. Is this work typical or atypical of the period style to which it corresponds? How so? You might compare and contrast it with a representative work of that period style in your essay. If your artist is well-known, and many, but not all, of the artists shown at the PAM are, you might also consider how this work relates to others you’ve seen by him/her, such as those in the textbook. Again, is this work typical or atypical of the artist’s oeuvre (body of work)? How so? This section of the paper will require you to consult with your textbook. Next, you’ll need to organize your observations into a coherent essay with an introduction and conclusion. Please give credit to all your sources by with citations (in-text parenthetical citations and a list of works cited at the end). Format your citations and list of works cited according to the MLA style (see the link in “Resources for Essay 2” in D2L).

Essays should follow these guidelines:
2-3 pages/600 – 800 words in length
Double-spaced in 12 point, Times New Roman or Arial font
1-1½ inch margins
Use of MLA (Modern Language Association) format for citing sources
Put the title of a work of art in italics not quotes
Use of paragraphs and proper grammar, syntax, punctuation, and capitalization (edit and proofread your document)
Follows PSU’s policy on academic honesty (see the syllabus)
The essay is worth 60 points and is due in D2L by 2:30pm on December 6. Essays that are turned in late will be penalized 6 points per day late; essays submitted after December 8 will not be read.
Points will be assigned according to the following rubric:
A (60 – 54) This is a model essay that follows all the instructions given above. It explains how the object corresponds to the period style in which it was and how it differs from said period style (if applicable). When possible, the essay will also consider if the object is typical or atypical of the artist’s other works. All sources are properly cited with in-text citations and a list of works cited in the MLA style. This essay is well-written, easy to follow, and free of errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and syntax.
B (53.5 – 48) This is a strong essay that follows the instructions given above. It explains how the object corresponds to the period style in which it was and how it differs from said period style (if applicable). When possible, the essay will also consider if the object is typical or atypical of the artist’s other works. This essay may have minor problems with contextualization, perhaps not considering features specific to the period style or features present in the work. Alternatively, the body of the essay might be well-done but perhaps the citations are incorrect or incomplete. But, this essay is well-written, easy to follow, and with minimal errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and syntax.
C (47.5 – 42) This is an average essay that follows most of the instructions given above (it might be late). It relates the work to the period style but is most likely generalized in its discussion. It may not consider key elements in the selected work of art or period. It may have incorrect or improperly formatted citations. And, it will likely have numerous errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and syntax.
D (41.5 – 36) This is essay will have many problems. It will likely be late and may only follow some, but not all, of the guidelines given above. This essay will demonstrate significant problems with the contextual analysis, perhaps failing to reference key aspects of the selected artwork or period, or even relating the work to an incorrect period. This essay will likely have considerable errors with citations along with grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and syntax.
F (below 35) This is essay will have many problems. It likely be late will not conform to the guidelines given above. This essay will demonstrate significant problems with the contextual analysis. This essay will likely have considerable errors with citations along with grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and syntax.
