Romanesque Europe and the Interrelated Phenomena Romanesque Europe is said to be defined by three interrelated phenomena: monasticism, pilgrimage and the Crusades (see p. 473).
Consider two massive portal sculptures from the churches of Moissac (p. 493) and Autun (p. 496). What is the relationship that each has to issues of pilgrimage and monasticism? Compare and contrast the imagery found on each of these monumental portals. What impact do you believe these had on their original audience? How does each comprise a “sermon in stone?” Romanesque art, architecture, sculpture, and painting characteristic of the first of two great international artistic eras that flourished in Europe during the Middle Ages.
