Code requirements and apply them to specific types of building construction
Two weeks ago a large fire tore through a multi-family apartment building and the response to the incident including the strategy and tactics have come into question. Specifically, a lack of understanding of the building construction and how to handle fires that have extended into large common attic spaces without fire walls was identified. Four firefighters were transported to the hospital after a section of lightweight truss collapsed and trapped them for a period of time. They had to be freed by the Rapid Intervention Team.
Review the department’s Rapid Intervention guidelines and draft a 4–5 page paper that includes the following:
- Identify at least five code requirements and apply them to specific types of building construction
- Describe at least five fire prevention strategies tied to a building’s construction and occupancy
- Include at least one recommendation you think is necessary in implementing a primary factors size up chart to use during incidents, explaining why this will increase firefighter safety
- Make any further necessary changes to the policy that will make it more comprehensive or easier to implement.
