Sonny’s Blues
Purpose: to analyze how a character changes in a short story.
In the stories that we have recently read, characters undergo important changes in the course of the story. In an essay, choose one character from one of the stories listed below and consider: how does the character change, and is the change positive, negative, or both? Support your argument with quotes and specific textual examples.
Story to write about: The narrator in Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin
Your paper should be organized in the following way:
Introduction in which you provide some necessary information, which should include a 1-2 sentence summary of what causes the character to change, and in which you state your thesis
Discuss the character at the early phases of the story: what word or phrase best describes the character and why?
Discuss how the character changes by the end of the story: what word or phrase best describes the character and why?
Your evaluation of the character’s change: do you believe the change is positive? Negative? Both? Explain your position. (If you can identify with the character in some way or the character reminds you of someone you know and this affects your opinion of the character, you may discuss this.)
Conclusion
– The thesis should be stated in the introduction paragraph it’s central idea.
