Tarasoff vs. Regents of University of California
The Tarasoff vs. Regents of the University of California case brought about changes to the APA ethics code in the addition of a duty to protect clause. The fear in adding a duty to protect clause stemmed from the thought that rapport between client and therapist would be reduced, or that the mentally ill would not seek treatment, if they knew that everything revealed in a session was not guaranteed confidentiality. In hindsight this provision might seem necessary and self-evident, as the Tarasoff case suggests. As abnormal psychology’s understanding of mental illness and its underlying mechanisms improves, combined with improved treatment interventions and technology we may very well have other perhaps necessary and obvious additions to be made to the APA code of ethics. In a one to two page opinion paper, propose one addition to the APA code of ethics that you feel would help address a potential ethical dilemma that is evolving as technology advances.
