The role of a crisis interventionist
The role of a crisis interventionist can be a taxing one. Crisis interventionists are also human.
Add the complexities of knowing how to do crisis intervention with being a church member who
loves and wants to help people, and the line for how involved we get in a victim’s life can often
get blurred. In other words, as crisis interventionists, we have an ethical duty to set boundaries
and develop healthy coping skills. In his research at the Wellesley Project, Caplan (1964) discovered certain people were able to
cope better than others. Use Caplan’s Seven Characteristics of Effective Coping Behavior found
in the Kanel text as a basis for your own ability to cope. If this is what we’re helping others to
achieve, we must consider how well we ourselves do under pressure.
• Using proper citations, provide a brief description of Caplan’s seven characteristics of
effective coping behavior that were displayed by those who were able to climb out of
their crisis state and of those who did not enter a crisis.
• Reflect on how well you have managed these characteristics in crisis. You can use first
person figure of speech to write this section of the paper. What area do you consider a
strength and what area do you find you need to grow?
