Visual Elements and Principles in Rivers and Tides
Watch the first 45 minutes of the movie Rivers and Tides about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. The movie shows him creating a number of sculptures in the natural environment; keep an eye out for how he uses visual elements and principles – they are key to understanding his work.
Shape – a type of shapes (organic, geometric, curvilinear or straight-edged?) and/or mass (open, closed, etc)
Light / Value – light or dark? High or low contrast? How is it used?
Color – describe: Hue, Value, Saturation, color scheme and relationships – are there contrasting or similar hues?
Texture / Pattern – tactile or visual, metaphorical or expressive
Space –does it have an illusion of depth? (eg, uses linear or atmospheric perspective)

Or is there an emphasis on flatness?
Time – references to the passage of time or sequence? Cyclical? Linear? Other?
Motion – does it move? (how? describe..) Or have implied motion?
