Walsh B. 2009. Getting real about the high price of cheap food. Time

Magazine, Aug 21, 2009

Please answer 1 of the following questions. (Choose one)

1.1 Why does Walsh (2009) say our industrial style of food production is doomed sooner or later?

or

1.2 How can it be that we pay less in real terms today for even more food than we consumed per person when Prof. Lee was a child in the 1960s?

All your answers should bear in mind the following definition of a sustainable food system which we have developed and adopted for this course:

A sustainable food system provides us with a diet that is low in environmental impact, which delivers food and nutritional security, and thus supports a healthy life for present and future generations. A sustainable food system is also protective and respectful of our food animals, biodiversity and ecosystems; delivers food to society in a manner that is culturally acceptable, accessible, economically fair and affordable; is nutritionally adequate, safe and healthy; is not dependent on non-renewable resources or exhaustive of conditionally renewable ones; and is not exploitative or abusive of human resources, especially its labor pool

In constructing your answer for each question, please be mindful of and triangulate your responses to this definitional touchstone. The grading rubric will be as follows:
