Bio Psychology and Disease Concept A perennial debate among addiction counselors revolves around the “disease concept.”
The traditional approach posits that substance dependence/addiction is a disease that can be treated, but not cured. Furthermore, total abstinence from the substance is required for the person in recovery to maintain his or her sobriety.
An alternative perspective holds that substance dependence is not a chronic, incurable disease and that controlled usage is possible.
Based on what you have learned about addictions in this workshop, which view do you hold? Support your view with empirical evidence drawn from the readings.
