ENGL 2325.2 The Media in Everyday Life

Final Analytical (Essay) Project (25%)

Due: March 26

Length: 4-5 double-spaced pages, MLA format

Choose one of the following topics for this final analytical essay project that deals with both digital texts and cultural discourses about digital technology.

  1. Formal Analysis of a Website

Select a website for your analysis. Please include the web address in your assignment.

Construct and support a claim (stated in a thesis statement) about how the website uses elements of its composition strategically to construct meaning (e.g., how a banking web site anticipates anxiety about online banking by creating the impression that it the site is secure).

The central argument of the analysis should be clearly stated in a thesis statement and supported with the analysis of specific formal evidence from the website. Be sure to explain in your analysis how the evidence that you select supports your central claim.

Your analysis should consider elements of composition and layout, using the correct terminology from semiotics and website form (see CP 124). Your analysis of the website can focus mainly on the homepage, but it should consider how hypertext and other factors suggest movement and meaning beyond the page. Your analysis should be focused, systematic, and insightful (i.e., it should go beyond the obvious).

  1. Analysis of an Advertisement for a Digital Technology

Find an example of an advertisement for a digital or computing technology (e.g., a Mac computer, Google glasses, virtual reality technology). The ad can be contemporary or historical, but you should know (and state) the original source and context in which the ad first appeared. Construct and support an argument (thesis) about what utopian idea the ad is suggesting that the digital technology will bring about. How do the formal elements of the ad convey this meaning? Your analysis should be focused, systematic, and insightful (i.e., it should go beyond the obvious).

  1. Analysis of a Representation of Computers or Digital/Social Media in a Moving image text

Find a compelling narrative representation of computers, or practices related to digital/social media in a feature film or television show. You may choose, for example, WarGames (1983), or an episode of Black Mirror. Construct and support an argument (thesis) about how the representation conveys a cultural idea/belief/anxiety, or offers commentary about a technology, platform, or media practice. While you should consider the function of the representation in the film or TV show as a whole, focus and support your argument by doing close analysis of the way the technology, platform, or media

Read the following case study:

The Whitley Corporation’s year-end is December 31, 2013. It is now October 1, 2013. The Whitley management team is taking a look at the prior nine months and attempting to make some short-term strategy decisions.

Whitley has experienced steady growth over the five preceding years. The result has been a steadily increasing EPS. Last year, Whitley reported an EPS of 1.95.

This year, owing to a mild recession, Whitley’s sales have fallen off. Management is looking for strategies that can improve the appearance of the financial statements. At the same time, there is a need for new equipment in the plant. Despite the recession, Whitley has enough cash to make the purchase.

Based on the year’s performance to date and extrapolation of the results to year-end, management feels that the pretax financial accounting income for the year will be $200,000. Transactions from prior years have resulted in a deferred tax asset of $15,000 and a deferred tax liability of $70,000 at the beginning of 2013. The temporary difference of $37,500 that resulted in the deferred tax asset is expected to completely reverse by the end of 2013. The deferred tax liability resulted totally from temporary depreciation differences. There will be a pretax reversal of $42,500 in this temporary difference during 2013.

Based on currently enacted tax law, the purchase of the equipment will result in a future taxable amount of $50,000. Whitley management feels that it can wait four to six months to purchase the machine. Whitley’s tax rate is 40 percent.

Write a response of 700 to 1,050 words to the following:

  • Determine the projected amount of income tax expense that would be reported if Whitley waits until next year to purchase the equipment.
  • Determine the projected amount of income tax expense that would be reported if Whitley purchases the equipment in 2013.
  • Explain why Whitley should/shouldn’t wait to purchase the equipment. Your answer should take into consideration the expected financial statement effects, as well as the effect on EPS. Support your conclusions with pro forma data. The number of shares that Whitley will use to calculate EPS is 55,500.
  • Determine the ethical considerations of this case.

Format your submission consistent with APA guidelines.

Revenue Cycle function Compliance Interview

Activity: As a new manager in the finance department responsible for the Revenue Cycle function, you are interested in learning the level of readiness, education, and training of the department staff as it relates to compliance. In order to obtain an accurate picture, a meeting with the Corporate Compliance Officer was requested. With the meeting set for Monday morning (plan on 45 minutes), there are a number of items that will need to be considered as you reflect on the experiences learned at your previous position. Prior to giving notice and submitting your letter of resignation, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) was completing their audit of the Corporate Compliance Plan and reviewing the organizations practices as they relate to the with the Responsible Corporate Officer Doctrine (RCO) . It was rumored that the company was going to be subjected to a Corporate Integrity Agreement (CIA)because of weak policies, lack of training programs, unclear communication of compliance initiatives, and failure to implement the Corporate Compliance Program that was approved by the board prior to the resignation of the organization’s Chief Executive Officer.

Question: Develop an interview agenda (about 10 questions, with appropriate citations in APA format) and be certain to consider not only your prior experience as you make a list of your questions but also a careful ear and eye for hints of the type of compliance issues present with your new employer such as their focus on the proposed Treasury regulations section 501, on charitable Hospital Organizations, FDA Red Flag Rules, Accounting control over Recovery Audit Adjustments, Privacy and HIPAA, Consumer Collection Laws. Also, develop for each question the Compliance Officer’s response and appropriate reference citations in APA format. In addition to the standard approach to agenda development (list of topics, estimate of time for each item to be discussed, and any written material that you would like to have the Compliance Officer review prior to the meeting) be aware of the meeting time and the politics of the office.

Total rewards package strategy for HR management and organizational leaders

Instructions

FFH is concerned about the competitiveness of its total rewards package. Most store managers and supervisors have been with FFH for over 20 years and have been very satisfied with their compensation. However, while interviewing prospective candidates, the company is getting indications that their total rewards package is not equal to their competitors. You are being tasked with recommending a strategy for improving FFH’s or a selected organization’s total rewards package in order to increase competitiveness with other businesses and to positively support recruitment and retention initiatives.

Include the following in your total rewards package strategy for HR management and organizational leaders:

Analyze components to include in the total rewards package. This analysis should include salary and benefits as well as areas beyond compensation. Should FFH or your selected organization lead the market, pay at market rates, or lag behind the market? To move toward the broader definition of total rewards, what two other components should be considered?

Compare the salary and benefits components with adding an incentive compensation package. Is there a benefit to including a bonus, commission, or profit sharing as part of FFH’s or a selected organization’s total rewards package?

Explain what legal compliance requirements FFH or a selected organization should consider when creating a total rewards package.

Recommend a total rewards package strategy for FFH’s or a selected organization’s management. Do cultural and inclusive practices that support a diverse workforce impact your recommendations? Justify the components you are including.

Your total rewards package strategy should demonstrate graduate-level writing skills through the accurate communication of thoughts that support a central idea and use of correct grammar and mechanics as expected of a human resources professional.

According to a study released in May 2016, U.S. multinational companies are saving $100 billion a year by shifting profits overseas to lower their tax bills. “In addition to merging or buying smaller foreign firms and moving their headquarters overseas to lower their tax rates, known as an inversion, companies also assign patents to subsidiaries in countries in which the profits made from them will be taxed at a lower rate” (Merle, 2016: U.S. companies are saving $100 billion a year by shifting profits overseas).
