Philosophy of financial stability

  1. in the reading Epictetus part 44 discusses this idea that money may give an individual more worth than it does an individual with less financial stability. This part of the text states it is illogical to say that if someone has more money they are superior to others have less, whereas, it is logical to say that a richer person’s property is superior to others of lesser financial stability. Do you agree with these statements? What is your view on this matter?
  2. Epictetus was a man who believed that we are basically in charge of our lives. We control how we let things affect us and the outcomes of our choices. In part 5, he begins by stating What disturbs men’s mind is not events but their judgments on events,î (Epictetus p.204) I really liked that he started off with this because it allows us to think about how the choices and decisions you make in your life only have an effect because you give it one. Though this statement is easily recognized to the good choices you make in life, most people do not look at how it is also true in the negative situations in their lives. When looking at how we impact the path of our own lives, we need to think about how our own suffering comes from our own choice to suffer. However, we can also decide to look at the brighter side of things because some things are out of our control. When was a time that you allowed yourself to suffer when you could have easily turned the situation around to be more positive? Do you think it would have been easier to change the outcome or just deal with the negative result?
  3. In the Stoicism reading #11, it states, “Never say of anything I lost it, but say I gave it back.” The first couple of examples in the paragraph refer to the death of a loved one. I certainly like the phrase I gave it back in this application.

In the second example, it refers to an estate and says “He who took it from me is wicked”. Is it fair to say that the person who takes from another is always wicked? When this is applied to someone who steals I understand. What about someone who loses their possessions through no fault of their own (i.e. Gambler, someone who chooses not to pay their bills)
