For this section, think of the NASW Code of Ethics. As social workers, we are to fight against social and economic injustices. There are many examples of these injustices in our everyday experiences as those of our clients. Think of the Flint Water Crisis, think of the cancellation by HART of bus lines in the rural areas, think of wage inequality, lack of access to internet services, discrimination, and oppression, etc. We know how many social and behavioral determinants of health are related to where individuals live and the daily stresses that they face. This section wants you to think about these macro issues and apply them to your client’s condition(s). Do provide examples.
Identify and discuss possible systemic and environmental factors that influence conditions contributing to the health issues/problem, illness or disease in question.
- Engage in policy practice to advance social and economic well-being and to deliver effective social work services. (2-3 pages)
For this section, think of your policy classes. You have identified issue(s) above, now think about how you are going to create change to address this injustice. You may think of strategies stemming from working to empower client and local groups, agencies efforts, or strategies to foster changes to state legislation and federal policy as examples. The key issue to describe here is what you can do like the change agent.
Identify relevant macro policy issues and discuss what strategies can be utilized by you as a practitioner to influence change on a macro policy level. Give specific examples to demonstrate strategies.
