Page 1: Introduce (Introduction) the paper and summarize (Summary) Crash—one complete page in length

Introduction:

Introduce Crash and Privilege, Power and Difference, as well as the key concepts that you will be discussing in your analysis. Your thesis should contain all five concepts you will discuss in your analysis. Your introduction should be brief, no more than 3-5 concise sentences.

Please note, concepts are not random quotes pulled from the text, concepts are significant words/phrases used throughout the text (Examples: racism, sexism, isms, matrix of oppression, matrix of domination, oppression, path of least resistance, dominance, etc., but are not entire paragraphs pulled from the textbook). If the concepts/term cannot be defined in Johnson’s words it is not a concept/term/connection. No concept/quote should be more than three sentences from Johnson. No blockquotes are permitted.

Summary:

Use your own words to summarize the movie, cite at the end of your summary

Do not borrow language from movie trailers or movie critics

Do not waste space identifying the actors and the role they played

Do identify the major characters

Focus on those parts of the movie that connect to concepts in Privilege, Power, and Difference the major themes of this class—leadership, ethics, activism, diversity, democracy, and social responsibility; however you should not be discussing these pillars in this paper. You must focus on scenes in the film that connect to these concepts.

Do not express whether you thought the movie was boring, exciting, well-acted (etc.)

Use “I,” but do not use an informal or unprofessional tone

Make sure that this section is coherent and well organized (do not fall into the ramblings associated with a “free-flow of consciousness”)

Do express your reaction to critical events in the movie

Do express how critical events in the movie might connect to your life

Do express how you may have acted/reacted under similar circumstances

Do select two to three scenes/events from the film and react to them (tell me how they made you feel, what you would have done in that position, etc.)

 

Page 3 and 4: Analysis—connecting the movie to significant concepts in Privilege, Power, and Difference.

Use direct quotes from Privilege, Power, and Difference to define significant concepts/terms. **If you cannot define it in Johnson’s words then it is not a concept/term. Your quotes should not be more than 3 lines in length. No block quotes are permitted. Please make sure you are not pulling random quotes, the quotes you select must identify and define a concept.

At least 5 connections, which are direct quotes from Privilege, Power and Difference, that define a concept/term, explained through specific scenes in CRASH.

Make at least three well developed connections. **Connections are where you find a concept/term in Privilege, Power, and Difference and you define it in Johnson’s words. You then connect that concept to an event in the film CRASH. Concept/terms selected must be definable in Johnson’s words, they cannot be random quotes pulled from the text.
