Some modern-day historians have marked that it is one of the more accurate depictions of the Roman Legion. The setting of the movie is around 120s or 130s of the Common Era which is well inside the Roman Imperial Period. It takes place in Britain which was one of Rome’s biggest conquests at the beginning of the Imperial Period. But the movie revolves around the importance of the Eagle (Aquila) for each legion. The setting is based on the legend of Rome’s Ninth Legion which mysteriously vanished arguably during a campaign into northern Britain. That actually happened. What was the fate of the legion, in reality, no one truly knows? The movie is fictional but revolves around the actual fact that the Ninth Legion vanished.
