Questions

1.Supporting Refugee Students

You have just been hired as a refugee transition agent! This position is part of a new initiative implemented by the provincial government for all educational institutions who are working with refugee students. Your role is to prepare educational institutions in a select community to receive refugee students and support their success as they transition into Canada. Your first task in this position is to write an action plan.

Response Requirements:

a)Introduction (~1/2 page): Describe what should be taken into account when working with refugee children and families (i.e., provide background information). Also ensure that you describe the community you are working for (ex. if you have been hired by the DSBN, describe local considerations that would impact refugee settlement). Introduce your plan by indicating the central goal and general overview of your points.

b)Action Plan Outline (~2 pages): Indicate what you would implement in order to assure that students and their families are being supported in the community’s educational institutions.

c)Conclusion (~1/2 page): Include the expected benefits and challenges to the action plan and any final notes on supporting refugee students in the community you have been hired to cover.

2.Educating for Sustainable Development

Educational institutions are spaces that have the ability to effect societal change. Considering our need for sustainable practices for human and environmental well-being, we are compelled as Global Citizens to make changes no matter how small, that will over time, make a big impact. As a staunch cosmopolitan, you have decided to start a blog with the aim of educating for

sustainable development (ESD) and implementing sustainable practices. Through this blog you intend on sharing your knowledge and experiences and (hopefully) encourage others to follow suit in their personal and professional lives. Your blog posts must include both a practical and ESD component.

Response Requirements:

a)Niche (~1 page): Choose a blog title, introduce yourself, and describe your niche to your readers (e.g., share the topic, its importance and relevance to your readers, your reason for the blog, set the stage for your content).

b)Blog Post #1 (~1 page): List two life changes that you have planned to or already put in place that will have an impact on the future of human and environmental well-being.

c)Blog Post #2 (~1 page): As a budding educationalist, share an experiential learning activity that families can do with their children or teachers can do with their students that facilitates them in becoming critical creatives (Peterson & Warwick, 2015).

3.Advocating for Human Rights and Development through Education

Although we ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and participate in the aim to achieve UN Millennium Development Goals (among others), children in developed countries are still left behind (e.g., education, well-being, and employment) due to inequalities. As a Global Citizen, you made a decision to advocate for all children’s rights and human development by Educating for Global Learning.

Response Requirements:

a)Advocacy Letter (~1 page): Write a professional letter to convince your school principal, director, or program leader that they should work with you in developing and implement a Global Education program. Explain how this Global Education program is so

b)important and how it will contribute to upholding human rights and impact development.

c)Global Learning for the Future (~2 pages): Include a supplementary document (to provide along with your letter) outlining the learning outcomes of the program for students in the school and, in turn, the anticipated local and global impact.

Analysis: With reference to specific passages (MUST pull passages/words from the article), answer at least six questions from the “Questions to Ask” worksheet.

Writing Project #2: Rhetorical Analysis Essay
This assignment asks you to write a 3-5 page rhetorical analysis essay about how effectively a writer presents and persuades his/her ideas to an audience.

In order to do this you will have to carefully read”Why Young People Shouldn’t Go to College (At Least Right Away)” (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.) and then analyze its rhetorical effectiveness from the perspective of the target audience.

You will establish an argument (thesis) that speaks to the writer’s effectiveness (or ineffectiveness) in the use of rhetorical appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos) to persuade a reader. NOTE: This essay does not ask you to agree or disagree or respond in other ways to the writer’s ideas. You are not to use first person pronouns (no “I”, “me”, or “my”).

A successful essay will include:
A well-developed introduction to the topic, a description of the rhetorical situation including title, genre (article), forum (name of the newspaper article is published in), author’s claim and purpose, author’s name/position, target audience, exigence, context
A strong thesis statement with “roadmap” for essay
Identification and explanation of appeals/devices the author makes to support his argument (with textual evidence)

Smooth integration of direct quotes from article
Analysis and discussion of how and why the author employs each appeal/device

Evaluation of the effectiveness/ineffectiveness each move related to target audience and purpose and, as a challenge, suggestion to improve a move/strengthen claim

Smooth transitioning and a strong structure connecting all of your ideas throughout the entire paper

Rhetorical Requirements:
Just as you are evaluating the rhetorical strategies the author is using, you will be employing rhetorical strategies of your own to convince your reader that your essay is well supported. To this end, please consider the following:

Audience: Write the paper as if addressing an educated reader unfamiliar with the text.

Evidence: Present and analyze specific examples from the text as evidence for your claims. Quotations and references from the text must be properly integrated.

Citation: Given that you are working with only one text and will have identified it’s bibliographic information in the introduction, no internal citation is needed. Include a works cited page listing in MLA format the bibliographic information of the article you selected

Structure: Have a clear thesis that signals your argument to the reader, and topic sentences that map out your organizational scheme. Use an effective structure that carefully guides the reader from one idea to the next. Pay careful attention to transitions between ideas and paragraphs.

Presentation: Edit your paper thoroughly so that sentences are readable and appropriate for an academic audience. Use proper MLA format for your essay.

Writer includes specific and relevant textual evidence (quotes/paraphrases) throughout each body paragraph (integrating direct quotes)
