How Blade Runner 2049 uses narrative presuppositions to subvert viewer expectations
This is for film theory. I’m writing my paper about the film Blade Runner 2049 and how it uses narrative presuppositions ingrained in audience expectations to subvert viewer expectations regarding the main hero.
Blade Runner 2049 spends a lot of time building up that the kid Agent K is searching for could actually be Agent K himself. And they use narrative expectations of the traditional hero to convince us that K is the kid. And then, they reveal that K is not the kid. He is not special in anyway. He’s just another replicant.

there are 2 options to write on. i would like for the paper to be on option number 1. i will link a docx file with the 2 prompts. The correct prompt will be prompt #1, which has to with John Locke and acquisition of property.
David de Bruijn
Write a 4 to 5 page paper (double-spaced; 12 pt.; standard margins) on one of the two arguments below. Note that whether or not you agree with the argument sketched in the prompt, you should consider how someone would respond to the object. (In other words: if you agree with the argument in the prompt, you must defend it from some objection).
(1) Locke:
In a central passage of his Second Treatise of Government (§27), John Locke develops a theory of how a person can come to legitimately acquire property:
[Everyone] has a property in his own person; this nobody has a right to but himself. ‘The labour of his body and the work of his hands we may say are properly his. Whenever someone, by his labor, changes a thing from its natural state [to make it more useful] he ‘mixes his labor’ with it. He ‘thereby makes it his property’, for ‘it hath, by this labour, something annexed to it that excludes the common right of other men’.
In response, critics of Locke have argued that this passage cannot explain how labor leads to ownership. After all, consider mixing a drink with a large body of water: surely this does not lead to ownership of all the water. So why would “mixing labor” lead to property ownership?
In this paper consider this objection to Locke. Are the critics right? How might Locke defend himself?
(2) Nozick/Rawls:
From Nozick’s perspective, the Wilt Chamberlain example provides a powerful argument against Rawls. For Nozick, no one can claim injustice if only Chamberlain benefits from the voluntary sale of tickets: not those individuals who buy the tickets; nor those individuals who are not involved and do not benefit from the sale. Accordingly, for Nozick the core flaw in Rawls’s thinking is that individuals have the right to do with their property whatever they choose to.
Is Nozick right? How might Rawls defend himself against the idea that no individual could complain about the way only Chamberlain benefits from the sale of tickets, and no one else? (It may be helpful here to consider what Rawls shares in common with Rousseau’s view of property).

Further, it was just reported that Wells Fargo revealed the bank made an error that could be the reason for hundreds of foreclosures. The report (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., filed to the Securities and Exchange Commission, said 625 customers were “incorrectly” denied a loan modification or were not offered a modification, all of which should have qualified.Out of those cases, 400 homes were foreclosed, something Wells Fargo defends might have happened anyway. To make up for the mistake, Wells Fargo has accrued $8 million to remedy affected customers, the report said. That amount averages $12,800 per borrower but the company did not say how much each individual would get or how the compensation would be distributed.
On Wednesday, the bank agreed to pay a $2.09 billion penalty (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for issuing mortgage loans it was aware contained incorrect income information. The bank agreed to pay the civil penalty under the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act of 1989 for the actions, which the government said contributed to last decade’s financial crisis.
In June, Wells Fargo agreed to pay $5.1 million (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to settle charges of financial misconduct, after the SEC learned the bank generated large fees by improperly encouraging retail customers to actively trade market-linked investments, which were intended to be held to maturity.
The latest finding adds to the bank’s growing list of problems, including a scandal in 2016 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. after regulators found the bank had opened millions of accounts without customers’ permission to meet quotas and generate sales bonuses.
In addition, the SEC found that Wells Fargo did not properly investigate employees who were engaged in the practice and supervisors systematically approved the transactions, despite internal policies prohibiting similar practices.
Could some of the issues experienced by Wells Fargo be attributable to wrong goal setting? Wrong Reward setting?
According to General Electric’s Steve Kerr, an expert in reward and measurement systems, “most organizations don’t have a clue how to manage ‘stretch goals’” (Sherman, 1995).
He advises managers to avoid setting goals that increase employee stress, to refrain from punishing failure, and to provide the tools employees need to meet ambitious goals. Integrating hese ideas, he urge managers to think carefully about whether goals are necessary and, if so, about how to implement a goal-setting system. In particular, he encourage managers to ask themselves the questions listed in the warning label in Table 1 (below) when considering the use of goals.
table 1
Goals may cause systemic problems in organizations due to narrow focus, unethical behavior, increased risk taking, decreased cooperation and decreased intrinsic motivation. Use care when apply Goals in your organization.
This cautious approach to setting goals is consistent with King and Burton’s (2003) claim that goals should be used only in the narrowest of circumstances:
The optimally striving individual ought to endeavor to achieve and approach goals that only slightly implicate the self; that are only moderately important, fairly easy, and moderately abstract; that do not conflict with each other; and that concern the accomplishment of something other than financial gain.
The attached articles attributes the wrong doing issues to a blind spot in leadership.
Answer the following questions:
1. How did Wells Fargo reward or goal setting negatively affect the company concerning their scandal involving the cross selling of accounts. (need to read attached article to understand cross selling of accounts issue)
2. What advise would you provide the leadership on how to best respond to these growing issues and scandals? Is turning a blind spot to the problems helpful to Wells Fargo?

Significance of Proposal (3-5 sentences) Why is it important, and how will it address your chosen issue?
*Some things to remember about this paper:
• Keep it simple: In order to make the paper and topic more manageable, don’t try to fix the big issue, try to approach a cause. For example, it’s impossible to think that we can fix “crime in Baton Rouge”, but if one cause of “crime in BR” in your paper was “high school dropouts, that is a more manageable idea.
• It must start with “you”: This is a personal proposal, in other words, how YOU would fix an issue. Therefore, it needs to be grounded in reality and start with YOU.
“We need to build a loop around the city” or “BRCC should…”or “They need to….” do not start with you. This needs to be a small proposal, something you can do, make, start, etc. It of course can balloon into something much bigger, but it begins with YOU.
• Keep it local: This also keeps it simple, we do not want to try to address nationwide issues, policies, or laws.
Pollution in Louisiana
The environment is a fundamental aspect of human life as it is a source for the various necessary factors that sustain our lives. However, due to the rising development in modernization and industrialization, there have increased cases of environmental pollution.
Environmental pollution entails the contamination of nature’s biological and physical systems. These instances of pollution have significantly affected both human plant and animal life.
Also, the hazards that arise from pollution include diseases which directly affect living organisms. In this paper, I shall discuss pollution concerning Baton Rouge in Louisiana. An emphasis will be on causal analysis whereby the various causes of pollution in the area will be analyzed.
Environmental pollution has been a great challenge in Louisiana, especially in Baton Rouge. It has been due to industrial and agricultural developments.
The causes of pollution in Baton Rouge such as Fertilizers and pesticides, plastics, gaseous emissions, and landfills have been discussed in the paper. Furthermore, the counter argument which includes other causes of emissions such as litter has also been discussed.
The abundant natural resources found in the area have provided numerous economic options for the ranchers, forest managers, and farmers. However, systems of production that are sustainable need extensive and intensive management practices which should incorporate the use of fertilizers to supplement and enhance maximum growth and yield from the various crops.
The commercial industries implement these processes in the area which deal with horticultural produce (Judith, 120). As a result, intensive application of fertilizer is made which becomes a significant cause of pollution in Baton Rouge.
During rains or processes of irrigation, runoff water from the urban and agricultural landscapes leads to the movement of fertilizers, soil, pesticides among other organic substances to flow into the water bodies. The sources discharge contaminants to the region’s environment and are thus regarded as significant causes of pollution.
The transition of nutrients and soil material is a process that occurs naturally in the atmosphere. Average annual rainfall experienced in Louisiana is over 60 inches while in some areas of the region, this level extends for over 100 days and even more. Also, the prevalence of inland and tropical storms can increase the amount in a matter of days or hours as witnessed in 2016.
A majority of residents in Baton Rouge have landscapes and lawns which require care through the application of pesticides and fertilizers (Judith, 124). Also, fields for sports and golf courses in various schools and the community are some other sources which require aesthetic maintenance through processes of plant and soil amendment.
Increase in the construction of infrastructure in Baton Rouge has led to the reduction of porous surfaces and growth of hard surfaces which prevents infiltration of water into the earth. Thus, chemicals from farms and landscapes become a significant cause of pollution in Baton Rouge…

What can western retailers do in counties where the rule of law is week and the incentive to fabricate building certificates and inspection reports is great?
Do you think the NYU Center for Business and Human Rights proposal for “direct, strategic sourcing” (page 26, link below) is a viable alternative? How effective do you think it will be?
On April 24, 2013, an eight-story building comprised of retail stores and garment factories called Rana Plaza collapsed in Savar, an industrial suburb of Dhaka, killing 1,137 people and injuring more than 2,500. Most of the victims were factory workers who stitched garments for export to
developed countries.
Some of the survivors described the collapse as similar to an earthquake, starting with a loud cracking sound followed by the floor opening up beneath their feet as the beams broke in half.
Investigations uncovered that cracks had appeared in Rana Plaza the day before its collapse and the shops on the lower floors had been evacuated. Because of frequent power cuts, heavy generators had been installed on the factory premises to keep the production line active at all times and caused major vibrations throughout the building while running.
Authorities had approved only five of the eight floors that were actually built. Both the police and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), one of the largest trade associations in Bangladesh representing the garment industry, had told Sohel Rana, the
building’s owner, that his building was unsafe, but Rana ignored them and the factories stayed open.
Workers were told by factory managers that the building had been inspected once more and was now considered safe, and also received threats that they would be fired if they did not show up to work.
Rana was arrested and initially charged with negligence. On June 1, 2015 the police in Bangladesh filed formal murder charges against Rana and 40 others, including his parents, several factory owners in the building, and at least a dozen government officials.
Charges for building code violations were also submitted to a court in Dhaka against 18 people, 17 of whom were among those charged with murder, including Rana and his parents.
Before the collapse, Rana Plaza had housed five different garment manufacturers: New Wave Bottoms on the second floor, Phantom Apparels on the third, Phantom Tac on the fourth, and Ether Tex and New Wave Style on the sixth and seventh floors.
Because of widespread subcontracting, few retailers knew straightaway whether their products had been made at Rana Plaza or not. Primark was one of the few companies that promptly admitted that they had contracted with New Wave Bottoms, and made a unilateral commitment to compensate the victims and their families.
Ether Tex claimed to have produced clothing for Walmart at their Rana Plaza facility, but Walmart denied the allegation. As branded garments and copies of contract orders were found in the rubble, some retailers went through their own records and realized they had to walk back some of their previous statements, including Benetton…
