Is death necessary for one’s life to be meaningful

Write clearly and stick to the point. Avoid giving unnecessary details.

Properly explain your points, and that you always define terms/position/principles (etc) that you introduce.

Always argue for your points. Do not simply state opinions. Relatedly, remember that philosophy is not journalism, in that you are not bound to be even-handed (it is more akin to law).

You should always be careful to describe the opposing view as charitably as possible. Avoiding logic problems.

Always begin your essay along these lines: Since the very dawn of time the problem of free will has been considered by many of the greatest and deepest thinkers in history

Always end your essay along these lines: So it can be seen from the above arguments that there are many different points of view about the free will problem.

Whenever in any doubt as to what to say about X, say, apropos of nothing in particular and without explanation, that X is extremely subjective.

When that gets boring, try saying that X is all very relative

Never say what it is relative to.

Product Life Cycle Analysis

Each of the products we use on a day to day basis involves a complex and involved process from its initial development up to and including the disposal of the product. The purpose of this assignment to obtain a greater appreciation of the typical product life cycle.

Select a product/industry that you are interested in learning more about. Potential products include; clothing, coffee/tea, paper, food items, etc. While it may be tempting to choose a product like a vehicle, the life cycle of each component will quickly make the assignment too complex and overwhelming so I encourage students to choose something simple.

Sections of your paper should include:

  1. Introduction- identify the product you have chosen to analyze and the purpose of your paper
  2. Life Cycle Description- describe the life cycle of the product (I.e., Cotton ñ agriculture ñ textile ñ manufacturing ñ t-shirt ñ store ñ use ñ donation – landfill). The life cycle of the product should identify relevant industry stakeholders and address some of the following areas:
  3. What is the product made of? How is it grown or manufactured?
  4. Where are the resources produced at each stage of the product life cycle?
  5. What modes of transportation are used during various stages of the product life cycle?
  6. What waste is created through the manufacturing process (I.e., water, material, packaging, etc.)
  7. How long is the typical life of the product you chose (I.e., people typically keep their cell phones for only 18 months)?
  8. What happens to the product once it has been disposed?
  9. Environmental Impact Analysis
  10. What is the industry doing to address the environmental impact during the product life cycle?
  11. What happens to the waste at the various stages of the product life cycle?
  12. What are the environmental impacts of the product at each stage of the product life cycle?
  13. Recommendations/Solutions- Identify if the industry is sufficiently responding to the concerns raised by governments and key stakeholder groups about the environmental impact of this product. This section should be based on stakeholder responses, reports and academic literature (I.e., this is not a personal position paper).
  14. Conclusion- summarize the findings presented in your paper
  15. References- APA format, minimum of five scholarly references (I.e., journal articles, textbooks)

Required Materials

Required textbooks: Norton Introduction to Literature, 12e Portable (Mays), and The Little Seagull Handbook, 3e by Bullock. Other required materials will be on reserve in the library or linked on the course’s Blackboard site. You are required to use those materials as well.

Also required: go to my academic Facebook page and like it

(https://www.facebook.com/ProfREMinksClassYClassPage?ref=hl) so that you can get some tips as the semester goes on. Print out the first page, put your name at the top, and turn it in. This will count as one homework assignment. You do not need to have a Facebook account to do the assignment.

You will also need a standard page notebook (8 Ω x 11) with pages that can be removed–a multi section spiral notebook or loose-leaf binder is fine as long as you can devote one section to EN 102; a folder with pockets–can be part of a notebook to keep handouts and research articles in; a 9 x 12 manila envelope to submit papers in (available in the bookstore); access to a typewriter, word processor, or typist; and money for photocopying or access to a personal printer. It is strongly recommended that you buy a good paperback dictionary if you don’t already own one (the free, online dictionaries will not be of much use to you in this class since they offer only the current, popular definition of words), and a good English handbook (the Little Seagull Handbook is preferred). Failure to obtain your own, correct, copy of the textbook and materials will adversely affect your grade.
