Develop a clear summary of the issue (10 points): Based on both articles that you read for Paper 1, provide a brief and well-developed summary of the expansion of access to preschool in California. the ethics of fallacious argumentation: What if we dis- covered that we could manipulate the voting public more effectively by the use of fallacious arguments than by the use of worthy arguments? The ethical question for all critical thinkers is: To what pur- poses ought I to put my powerful critical thinking skills? This question is analogous to the question: To what pur- poses ought I to put my college education? These are, in part, ethical questions and, in part, questions about one’s sense of how to make the meaning of one’s life. And what are your answers? Why?

As you all know, there has been a successful Chinese experiment that used a single cell from a laboratory rat to generate a living chimera of that rat. In the past whenever the TV news programs in Chicago ran headline stories featuring a sketch artist’s drawing of a fugitive, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) hotline received over 200 phone calls from people all over the city who said that they spotted the person. Tonight the Chicago TV news programs are going to feature a sketch artist’s drawing of a fugitive whom the police are trying to locate. This will probably yield hundreds of calls on the CPD hotline. 7. Suppose we imagine electricity flowing through wires in the way that water flows through pipes. With this analogy in mind, it would be reasonable to infer that wires that are larger in circumference should be capable of carrying greater electrical loads. 8. Former NFL quarterback James Harris tells a story about how he committed to throwing footballs until his arm hurt. Knowing that the NFL regardedthe down-and-out pass pattern as one of the more difficult passes for the quarterback, Harris visited the local park and, while nobody watched, he tested himself. He targeted a tree and threw at it blindfolded. He knew that if he missed, he would have to walk a long way downfield to pick up the football. And he did miss the first time. So he wondered whether it was a good idea to even try again. But he did try. And when he heard the ball hit the tree that sound gave Harris a ton of confidence.14 9. My client did not intend to use the weapon, and so he is not guilty of armed robbery. Yes, we agree with the prosecution that he committed the robbery. Incident Description
On 11/1/2010, McMurray was walking home from school when he was approached on foot, from behind, by the suspect. The suspect asked McMurray, “Kid, which way to the hospital?” As McMurray started to give the suspect directions, the suspect attempted to grab McMurray in a bear-hug. McMurray was able to fight his attacker, kneeing him in the groin area. While the suspect was incapacitated momentarily, McMurray fled southbound on Main Street; he looked back to see the suspect get into the passenger side of a blue Chevrolet Camaro, unknown license plate. McMurray did notice red paint transfer on the passenger quarter panel and a dent in the same area. He did not see the driver clearly, but believed it was a woman, after catching a glimpse of someone with long blond hair behind the steering wheel. The vehicle made a U-turn and traveled northbound on Main Street. McMurray continued to flee to a friend’s home in the area he was in, where he immediately telephoned police.

Pre-writing
To get started writing your essay:
1. Review What is an Essay?
2. Take time to review possible subjects
3. Use prewriting to help you narrow your topic to one experience.
Remember that “story starters” are everywhere. Think about it—status updates on social media websites can be a good place to start. You may have already started a “note”on Facebook, and now is your chance to develop that idea into a full narrative. If you keep a journal or diary, a simple event may unfold into a narrative. Simply said, your stories may be closer than you think!
Drafting
When drafting your essay:
1. Develop an enticing title—but don’t let yourself get stuck on the title! A great title might suggest itself after you’ve begun the prewriting and drafting processes.
2. Use the introduction to establish the situation the essay will address.
3. Avoid addressing the assignment directly. (For example, don’t write “I am going to write about my most significant experience,” because this takes the fun out of reading the work!)
