Research: Look at the “winners” in your space.”

Review feeling, tone, and the key messages as well as their communication “pillars.” How would your blog have a different tone, new perspective? What would you want to be covering?

Below, find a sample well-done blog from a previous semester along with the student’s analysis of what she tried to do with Message Design.

WHAT YOU WILL EXECUTE:

  1. A 1-page description of your blog choices, as you see it in the sample below, to include Message, Medium, Audience and Business Goal/the Desired Result. WITH A HYPERLINK TO YOUR BLOG—ENSURE THE HYPERLINK WORKS! IF PASSWORD PROTECTED, GIVE ME THE INFORMATION.
  2. A completed blog with the following:
  3. A good About Me section.
  4. A color scheme and template that well-represents your “brand feeling.”
  5. A great opening post that tells a story or exemplifies your brand feeling and main message, so that people would want to return to the blog.
  6. A section that describes what the purpose of the blog is, your main message.
  7. Your “pillars, “ or the micro-messages should probably be sections of the blog.

For example, one student recently made a blog on Women’s Fitness. Her Tagline was: Make it Cute, Make it Sweaty, Make it Fun. These were her pillars..So she covers cute workout wear and shoes, strenuous exercise, and fun exercises to do to mix up your routine.

  1. Should be free of grammar issues

If you want the site to be TOTALLY private and password-protected, we can do that!! https:// en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Do What You Love: You DO NOT need to make the blog about a specific career path. You can state your career goals in the About You section, and make the blog about a passion–say health or Broadway, or Skiing. Do it on something you care enough to keep writing about. Then you eventually send the link to your blog to internships and future employers to show them you understand creating web content, not just consuming it.

Legal Image Use: **If you are doing a cooking blog, you might need to use an image of fruit you do not have. In this case, Be sure not to steal. Using Google Images is NOT legal. You can search for free sites like. http://www.stockfreeimages.com/, and be sure to correctly cite their artists when using an image.

WHY A BLOG? In this case, I have chosen the medium for you–a Blog because we are all online, and even if you are planning to be a lawyer, lawyers have told me that they would consider a candidate as very ambitious and creative who showed a passion and an interest well enough to write well.

Other Blog Posts You Will Add During the Course of the Semester.

All posts should be between 200-500 words unless the how-to really justifies longer explanation. The video post may be slightly shorter, but will still need to introduce the video and after it plays summarize what people would have seen if they viewed the video.

These are all due as a final review of your blog after spring break and count toward your participation grade. Any that is not done will deduct 20 points from your participation grade.

  • You will do a Cornerstone blog post—You will write something in a list form that people will want to return to again and again. Examples:
  • The top 10 football plays of all time.
  • The Best essential oils for the top 10 common ailments
  • The only 5 things you must have in your closet,”
  • “Seven steps to a perfect date.”
  • You will do a “How-to” blog post—teach your reader something

SAMPLE “A” BLOG:

The Sandy Side of Life–credit to Taylor Shuman https://thesandysideoflife.wordpress.com

Now, please remember that Taylor’s first post was several months before what you see at the top of her blog. So scroll back to September to see her first post. You will need to design your blog on WordPress, Weebly, Wix, Squarespace or another platform. Make sure the About Me section is filled out, with a pic of you, and your pillars are clear, the About section for the blog is clear, and you have written one starting post.

My Brand Feeling: Relaxation

Main Message:

The Sandy Side of Life serves as a place for beach lovers to learn more about the beautiful beaches of the West Coast and what they have to offer so that they can enjoy their beach trip to the fullest.

Pillars: Culture, exploration, and leisure

Create a Blog about Traveling Make a Blog Target Audience:

The target audience for my blog is comprised of young beach lovers on the West Coast. I’m writing to people who love to truce relaxing drives along the coast and go wherever the current takes them. These are individuals who are lovers of art, delicious cuisine, wine, shopping, the outdoors, unique experiences, and small businesses. My target audience ranges in age from 18-35 years old.

While researching other beach blogs, I found that there aren’t very many quality beach blogs. Many of them are run by the state or the city, speak about only one beach and provide very “run of the mill” information for visitors. Most of them don’t have a distinct brand feeling or a clear target audience. I want my blog to stand out and to speak directly to my target audience in a way that will catch their attention because it was designed for them. I want my blog to talk about a variety of beaches that will appeal to all sorts of beach lovers. My blog will give readers a list of places to visit and explore that wouldn’t appear on your typical beach blog.

Medium:

My blog will consist of written posts and pictures. I love to write, so I plan to utilize this skill to draw my target audience in. I plan to use images I’ve taken to emphasize my brand feeling and illustrate my writing

Desired Result:

With my blog, I hope to create a community where beach lovers can have a conversation about their shared passion for the ocean and its culture. I want to make my blog a wealth of information about West Coast beaches and each of their individual cultures. One day, I hope to show this blog to a future employer to demonstrate my writing skills and ability to successfully reach a target audience. I also want my blog to teach future employers more about me, while also showing them what I’m passionate about.
