Gideon Garner discovered Gartner magic quadrant at a research convention in Stamford, Connecticut. Gideon was famous for “Stalking Horses” and believed in experiments that promoted creativity. In one of the conventions, an analyst demonstrated a novel technology, a time when Gideon stood up and drew a quadrant containing two axes. He did not intend the quadrant to be published. In the 1990s, the quadrant officially evolved and currently, there are some Magic Quadrants for industries such as defined Firewalls (Dayley et al., 2014).
Nevertheless, Gartner magic quadrant is a widely debated device for selecting products in IT sector. Critics allege that it is not only simple and subjective but also blind spots. Regardless, of these criticisms, vendors, as well as IT managers, continue to support it; vendors support Gartner magic quadrant once they are chosen managers while IT leaders when they use it in short-listing vendors.
Gartner magic quadrant is useful such that it has two axes; horizontal and vertical.
