Performance of Sergei Rachminoffs Piano Concert We will imagine ourselves attending a concert performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto #2. Watch it here:
Write a review of the musical piece and performance, as if you were going to print the review in the next morning’s edition of the local newspaper.
Begin by telling the reader about the orchestra, conductor, and soloist.
Then for each of the three movements of the concerto:
- a) tell what the general mood of the movement was, and how that mood was created (tempo, dynamics, modality, harmonic tension);
- b) tell whether the musicians seemed to make none, a few or a lot of mistakes in the performance
- c) tell whether at any point you thought the musicians should have played the music louder, softer, faster or slower
In the last paragraph, tell what the audience’s reaction was to the whole composition, and then discuss whether you think the people reading your review should purchase a recording of the performance, and why or why not.
