Primary Source Analysis Writing Assignment

Primary Source Analysis Writing Assignment For your third Writing Assignment we are going to be analyzing primary sources again; however, this time you are going to locate your own sources. If you were writing a research paper, this would be the part where you find and analyze quality sources that could potentially be used in your paper to support your thesis. You will complete the following Primary Source Analysis under the WA-3 Discussion Forum in the Discussion Board.

Create your own thread with your first and last name as the subject. This assignment is worth 25 points toward your Writing Assignments Grade; the grade breakdown is listed below. You will need to cite your sources for this assignment (see “to get full credit” below). You will not be able to see anyone else’s post until you complete your own. This assignment is due by Sunday 4/7.

Primary Source Analysis Writing Assignment Instructions

1) Research various academic databases to locate primary sources related to the material in Chapters 8-12. I recommend starting with the National Archives or any number of the databases available in the SHSU online library. You cannot use the publisher collections from WA-2 (the purpose of this assignment is to locate your own sources independently).

2) Then choose ONE document and ONE image to analyze using the questions listed below. Your chosen document and image do not have to come from the same chapter (example: you could choose a document from Chapter 9 and an image from Chapter 12). Your document can be a newspaper article, diary entry, piece of legislation, book, letter, speech, or other firsthand has written material from the period. Your image can be a poster, photograph, political cartoon, portrait, painting, map, or other firsthand visual material from the period. If you are having difficulty differentiating between secondary and primary sources, refer to your library tutorial module or email me with any questions. This is an exercise in primary source analysis; you need to become comfortable with locating primary sources, evaluating them, and using them in a research paper. This is also an exercise in writing; I want you to include as many pertinent details as you can while remaining clear and concise. Remember your identifiers – who/what/when/where/how/why – and use them to answer these questions.

3) You will submit your discussion in the same format as your WA-2 assignment. Copy the questions below (for both the document and the image) into a Word document and fill them out completely, with your answers listed after each question. Then copy and paste the questions and answers (for both the document and the image) into the text box of your discussion thread. Everything should be copied over, including the headers and questions.

4) Respond to one classmate. Your response should be thoughtful and should contribute to the discussion. I agree or a good job is not a solid response.
