“The Things They Carried”
O’Brien’s story “The Things They Carried” begins by exploring the experiences of friends of Ted Lavender, a soldier who died in Vietnam by an enemy sniper. He blamed himself for Lavender’s death, particularly for pining Martha’s name. The lieutenant henceforth hates the girl after Lavender’s death. The story demonstrating the amoralities of the evils and obscenity of war begetting individuals, after a smoking grenade killed their friend while they were having fun under a tree due to the abundance of weaponry material. There was a change in behavior among all men and friends henceforth, all who depended on the memories they had for their friend. Soldiers got lost in their dreams as it is the case when one writes a letter to his friend’s sister after two months, explaining how good his brother was to him in real life. O’Brien’s depiction of actions, thoughts, and perceptions regarding this letter and the long silent reply proves the struggles, hardships, and amoralities of war individuals had to experience trying to cope with the soldier’s death. The real moral of the story depicts the sad and sorrowful nature of the characters concerning the death of their friend. His accidental death had created a high social and psychological lift between his friends, whereby each one day dreamt and was left to cope with the tragic and beautiful memories they had shared before his death.
Thesis: O’Brien brands the story to reflect the experiences of memory, love, and sorrow among men who were once fool-heartedness, wasteful, and immature given after Lavender’s death.
