Source of information: Peggy Cabrera, Gainesville Fire Rescue Department spokeswoman
The fire occurred at Extended Stay America, 3600 Southwest Forty-Second Street.
The fire was in a room furnished with a full kitchen.
Guest Chelsea Fenton was frying plantains in a skillet on the stove.
Fenton told police that grease splashed on her hand, burning her. She accidentally knocked the pan of hot oil onto the floor. Some oil got on the carpet and caught carpet on fire.
Fenton called 911 at 5:15 p.m., GFR arrived 6 minutes later.
The fire had spread across a large part of the carpet.
The fire alarm sounded and the hotel had been evacuated.
Gainesville Fire Rescue used foam extinguishers to put out the fire.
The fire damaged no other rooms.
Guests were allowed back in the hotel about 45 minutes after the fire was extinguished.
The customers staying on the floor where the fire occurred will be relocated to other rooms in the hotel due to fumes from the burning carpet.
Direct quote from Peggy Cabrera, Gainesville Fire Rescue Department spokeswoman: “Fenton was taken to the emergency room at the North Florida Regional Medical Center for treatment of her burns. The smoke detectors in the room and the hotel worked, and everyone was evacuated from the building safely. At this time I cannot comment on anything else concerning the ongoing investigation. All I can say is that people need to be careful when cooking in a small space especially when cooking with hot grease.”
