Ethical and Legal Implications of Prescribing Drugs

Ethical and Legal Implications of Prescribing Drugs What type of drug should you prescribe based on your patient’s diagnosis?

Ethical and Legal Implications of Prescribing Drugs
Ethical and Legal Implications of Prescribing Drugs

How much of the drug should the patient receive? How often should the drug be administered? When should the drug not be prescribed? Are there individual patient factors that could create complications when taking the drug? Should you be prescribing drugs to this patient?
These are some of the questions you might consider when selecting a treatment plan for a patient. As an advanced practice nurse prescribing drugs, you are held accountable for people’s lives on a daily basis. Patients and their families will often place trust in you because of your position. With this trust comes power and responsibility, as well as an ethical and legal obligation to “do no harm.” It is important that you are aware of current professional, legal, and ethical standards for advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority.

Ethical and Legal Implications of Prescribing Drugs Discussion

In this Discussion, you explore ethical and legal implications of scenarios and consider how to appropriately respond.
Scenario 1:
As a nurse practitioner, you prescribe medications for your patients. You make an error when prescribing medication to a 5-year-old patient. Rather than dosing him appropriately, you prescribe a dose suitable for an adult.
Scenario 2:
A friend calls and asks you to prescribe a medication for her. You have this autonomy, but you don’t have your friend’s medical history. You write the prescription anyway.
Scenario 3:
You see another nurse practitioner writing a prescription for her husband who is not a patient of the nurse practitioner. The prescription is for a narcotic. You can’t decide whether or not to report the incident.
Scenario 4:
During your lunch break at the hospital, you read a journal article on pharmacoeconomics. You think of a couple of patients who have recently mentioned their financial difficulties. You wonder if some of the expensive drugs you have prescribed are sufficiently managing the patients’ health conditions and improving their quality of life.

Ethical and Legal Implications of Prescribing Drugs Chapter Review

Review Chapter 1 of the Arcangelo and Peterson text, as well as articles from the American Nurses Association, Anderson and Townsend, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Philipsend and Soeken.
Select one of the four scenarios listed above.
Consider the ethical and legal implications of the scenario for all stakeholders involved such as the prescriber, pharmacist, patient, and the patient’s family.
Think about two strategies that you, as an advanced practice nurse, would use to guide your ethically and legally responsible decision-making in this scenario.
Post an explanation of the ethical and legal implications of the scenario you selected on all stakeholders involved such as the prescriber, pharmacist, patient, and the patient’s family. Describe two strategies that you, as an advanced practice nurse, would use to guide your decision making in this scenario.

Re: Mercer Farms Inc.
Please forgive my generality, but since I don’t know at the moment who will be doing this research, I have laid out a brief outline of the major points I think should be considered in evaluating the proposal of Mr. Michael Bell, the Operations Manager of Mercer Farms, Inc.
Background: Allen Mercer, a conservative older gentleman who founded the firm, is the client. He is very proud of the firm’s commitment to quality. Michael Bell, a nephew of Mr. Mercer, was hired by him two years ago. Michael is 27 and recently graduated from a state university with a business degree.

Q. 1. Using the client’s production cost data (Exhibit 1), demonstrate the change in profits resulting from the above production recommendation for the alternative potential selling prices of GM yellow corn.
Q.2. Okay, that’s the economic analysis, but consider the nature of a family business and any strategic and ethical issues that might be important, and check with me. We want to make the right recommendation for the client.

Reflection and Understanding Feelings

Reflection and Understanding Feelings Improving Reflection of Feelings:
Reflection of feelings is the most effective counselor response, but is also the most difficult to learn and the least used.

Reflection and Understanding Feelings
Reflection and Understanding Feelings

To improve your skills in this area ask yourself these questions:
How would I feel if I just said this?
Can I hear the feelings behind the words? Can I label them?
What does life feel like through this person’s eyes?
What does this person’s body language tell me?
Do I hear pleasant and/or unpleasant feelings?
Familiarize yourself with the following feelings. This will help you to identify feelings more easily

Find a current ethical issue (either in your own life or on the world stage that is going on right now) and
Evaluate Nel Nodding’s “Ethic of Care” as applied to this ethical issue. How would she respond? What is the difference between how men are apt to respond and how she says women are wired to respond and approach the issue? What are the pros and cons of this difference? Is it fair to make this distinction? Is it helpful? Make sure you quote from our reading in giving your evaluation.
Finally, does she bring anything new or helpful to your own research for your final paper?(Stockholm Syndrome) Explain!

Research a company or incident that has occurred recently and describe it in depth to your classmates.
What was the Company?
What unethical behavior took place?
Who was involved? What was the impact (national or global)?
What legal action resulted, if any? Did the company put into place any code of conduct after the incident?
What could it have done to avoid this situation?
Post your example early in the week and make sure to read the answers of your peers.
Do not repeat companies already selected by your peers.

Sleep and Sleep Meditation and Treatment

Sleep and Sleep Meditation and Treatment Description
Assignment: write a two- four page medication and treatment review.

Sleep and Sleep Meditation and Treatment
Sleep and Sleep Meditation and Treatment

Use the following vignette to guide your creativity on how, given your extensive knowledge on neuron communication, you would advise Jessica. You have the option of writing the paper as though it is for Jessica’s doctor or you can write a more generic term paper.

Sleep and Sleep Meditation and Treatment

Jessica feels she is barely making it. She works 40 hours and commutes 90 minutes every day. She is a busy 50 year old mom. She suffers from insomnia. Her insomnia has forced her to give up her social life and gym workouts. She is simply too tired and depleted. She drinks four to five cups of coffee per day to keep awake and tries to catch a nap whenever possible. She goes to bed at 11:00 PM. She usually falls asleep in less than 15 minutes, but occasionally it seems to take her hours to fall asleep. She wakes up three to four times per night and sometimes won’t fall asleep for hours. Sometimes she turns on the TV to entertain her until she falls asleep around 4:30 AM. She will stay asleep until about 7:30 AM and awaken very tired.
Her doctor stated that she is healthy except for excessive sleepiness, fatigue, 15 extra pounds, and a lack of energy. A psychiatric interview revealed high stress levels, but no evidence of depression, anxiety, or other psychopathology. After reading this vignette and the struggles of Jessica, write a summary of sleep, sleep disorders, and sleep treatment.

Sleep and Sleep Meditation and Treatment Paper Information

Include all of the following information in your paper to get maximum credit.
Paragraph 1 = Define sleep

• Include how Zolpidem works in the body using psycho-biology terminology with specific neurotransmitters, receptors, etc.
• Include information about the medication’s usefulness including time of effect taking place, ability to work in one day versus 7 days, does it only work for 1 hour or does it last several hours or even 24 hours.
• Which populations should not use it?
• Are there side effects and if so list them and state the level of danger?
• Is it addictive? Describe and define addiction from a psycho-biology perspective. Is it similar to
other addictive medications, if so, how?
Paragraph 3: Define and describe sleep hygiene and use PSYC 250 terms
• Paragraph 3 should address sleep hygiene and what would best help Jessica.
• Describe and define sleep hygiene
• Give at least one benefit and one limitation of sleep hygiene. Paragraph 4: Define and describe alternatives to medication
• You should clearly promote an alternate treatment for Jessica even if your thesis supports taking Zolpidem.
• Paragraph 4 should be 1 alternative other than a prescribed medication.
• Define, describe, and give evidence of your alternative treatment’s effectiveness
• Give at least one benefit and one limitation for your alternative.
• Your alternative MAY NOT be cannabis.

Grammar and syntax are important! Ask a peer or the writing center to proof read a finished draft. Do not simply cut/paste material from other sources (see Safe Assign above). Use references from your text and other reliable sources and this paper should not have direct quotations. Instead, paraphrase resources to demonstrate your command of the material. You do not need a Works Cited separate page.
Slang, unsophisticated opinion, and off-topic remarks will be penalized with reduced points. Your alternative MAY NOT be cannabis.

A Professional Code of Conduct
This paper will include a set of five to ten principles (that you create) that, combined together, provide a code of conduct for YOU in the role YOU plan to fulfill in your professional life. You may focus on a code of conduct as the professional you will be or you may address a code of conduct you will share with your staff or co-workers in your professional role, i.e. owning a retail company, managing a veterinary clinic, etc. You should begin by researching codes of conduct that exist for people in your position, either by personally inquiring or by doing online research. You may use some of these in your code of conduct but you must add your own to put your stamp on it. The sources you find and use should be referenced appropriately.
Once you have established the codes of conduct, you must discuss what ethical theory (or theories) apply or reject each code. This should be the main focus of the paper. You must discuss at least 3 separate ethical theories. This means thoroughly defining each theory with at least 2 separate, credible sources and then step by step explaining how the codes apply or rejects an ethical theory.
Within reject, you may also discuss the reasons for your code of conduct choices indicating the overall intent of your code in its entirety.
