INTERNATIONAL TRADE ASSIGNMENT 1
SEMESTER 1, 2019

I. INTRODUCTION
Assume that you are an economic consultant hired by an international organization/government to provide your expert advice on conditions pertaining to international trade in Italy and Sweden.

Your analysis will consist of two separate reports (one for Assignment 1 and the other for Assignment 2). As an expert, your job is two-fold:
1. You are required to analyse any relevant issue using your technical skills. This involves utilizing your knowledge in international trade models as well as inspecting and interpreting data.

2. You need to communicate your results in an effective way.
The purpose of this exercise is to assess your aptitudes in each domain.

You will evaluate the trading conditions in these countries (Italy and Sweden) based on the scenarios detailed in each question in this Assignment.

Your analysis will form the basis for a short report to the international organization/government body—summarising your analysis and the associated rationale.

II. DATA SOURCE
For your data analysis, you first need to obtain data from the World Bank (see the link below) and follow the steps described below. Notice that World Bank regularly updates its database; therefore it is crucial to obtain all data as soon as possible.

The data range
is from 2003 to 2015. You need to obtain the country-level data for Italy and Sweden on:
i. Imports of goods and services (in current US$)
ii. Exports of goods and services (in current US$)
iii. GDP (in current US$)
iv. GDP per capita (in current US$)
v. GINI Index (World Bank estimate) from the World Bank’s World

Development Indicators:
[Note that if your browser (such as Chrome) does not open the web page, try a different browser (such as Internet Explorer)]
Please DO NOT attach Excel files to the brief. The policy brief needs to be precise and short. Avoid unnecessary jargon. Your policy brief cannot exceed two pages.

III. REQUIRED TASKS
Your tasks involve two dimensions. Firstly, you need to analyse the data (see Steps 1, 2 and 3 in the next section). Secondly, you need to perform a technical analysis by considering a hypothetical trading environment based on Ricardian model (see Step 4 in the next section).

Political violence in Brazil Essay Assignment

Political violence in Brazil
Political violence in Brazil

Political violence in Brazil

Here is a checklist to help ensure everyone’s term project will meet the minimum requirements for the course.

I ask that everyone read, re-read and re-re-read the full set of directions as well. If you just follow each step carefully, you will be fine. If you fail to meet the minimum requirements, you will not receive a grade for this assignment.

Term project checklist:

1. Read the questions that you need to answer carefully. Here they are, from the syllabus:

What are the different roles of violence in a political system, both in maintaining a particular political order and in bringing about political change?
When is violence more likely to be resorted to and why might it succeed? Is it sometimes necessary?

Your analysis should include discussions of contemporary problems in one specific political system, different ways the government authorities may resort to force, and the political culture of the selected state.
What are the potential resolutions to end the violence in the selected case study?

2. Include a visual component to your essay. This assignment requires the following visual elements from a scholarly source to communicate information:

A chart or graph must be fully described, explained, and applied to the essay topic in order to connect the essay argument(s) to the chart or graph.

Use of a visual image from an outside source to communicate information. The image must be fully described, explained, and applied to the essay topic in order to connect the essay argument(s) to the image.

Remember to fully cite in your bibliography where your chart, graph, or image came from.

3. Speaking of bibliographies, the sources for this project must be 3 peer-reviewed journal articles, they must have more than 5 pages of actual content and must be less than 10 years old (2007-2017).

You cannot use a government study, legislation, website, newspaper, or news magazine as a primary source for this project. You can use such materials as secondary sources, but the 3 peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles are a requirement.

When you are preparing a term paper, you must cite the highest quality sources. Also, remember that bibliographies are always alphabetical.

4. Make sure you include the page range the article appeared in the journal as required by both MLA or APA formatting.

I know it is a minor technicality, but it is important in the higher education environment to properly identify your sources. A journal article should be cited as follows (in MLA format):

Guideline: Author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Journal (italicized) volume and issue number. Date of publication (in parenthesis): page numbers. Name of Database (italicized). Medium of publication (web). Date of access (day, month, year).

Example: Roberts, Kari. “Détente 2.0? The Meaning Of Russia’s ‘Reset’ With The United States.” International Studies Perspectives 15.1 (2014): 1-18. Academic Search Complete. Web. 4 May 2015.

5. The paper is to be formatted with size 12 font (Arial or Times New Roman text), with 1 inch margins and double spaced. The paper must be in essay format, meaning no bullet points or numbered points. Also, be sure to have a cover page and a works cited page. All of the general formatting requirements are listed in Addendum II of the syllabus.

6. All sources must be cited both in the body of the essay and on the works cited page.

7. The minimum writing requirement is 1000 of your own words or about 3 pages (not including cited information), with research included the assignment should be around 5-6 pages. Do not use long quotes, one or two sentences from each source to support your key points will be sufficient.

It is strongly advised that you begin early, and perhaps show the final draft to one of the GOVT tutors. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Jack had decided to go to University. New Town University (NTU) advertises their courses on the internet. Jack completed the online application form to show his interest in attending NTU.

On 1st July, NTU sent Jack a letter offering him an unconditional place on the course for two semesters starting on 1 September and 1 January together with an acceptance form to be signed and posted to them by 1 August.

Jack completed the acceptance form and added that he is only able to attend the January and June Semesters. NTU responded ‘Unfortunately our offer for this course runs in September and January only. We are pleased to offer you a place at our College starting in September.’

Jack sends an email asking if NTU is able to accept payments at the start and end of the January Semester. NTU wrote back stating, ‘Our policy is that payment be made on or before the first day of the September and January Semester.’

Jack quickly sends back the acceptance form and added, ‘I accept the unconditional offer if I can raise funding by the beginning of semester.’

On 5 August, NTU sent a letter to Jack withdrawing their offer but the postman had delivered this to the wrong address and Jack never received it.

Jack arrived at the college on 1 September to register and is told that he does not have a place.

Using primary sources, discuss each of the stages in the negotiations between Jack and NTU. Conclude by discussing if and when a contract was formed between them.
