The term “Microaggression” might be new; but it has been prevailing in the society from a long time ago. It is the cause of racism. It was introduced by psychiatrist Chester M. Pierce. Microaggression is a big issue of the world and it should be defined, identified and discussed.

We face microaggression daily, but we barely notice it. It can be seen by people’s small activities. In an article entitled “Unmasking racial microaggressions,” Tori DeAngelis mentions, “Some racism is so subtle that neither victim nor perpetrator may entirely understand what is going on- which may be especially toxic for people of color”.

Tori DeAngelis’s argument is that Microaggressions takes place daily in our day to day life, but no one really notices it because most of the times it is done intentionally or not directly to the victim and thus, it is unnoticeable.

The very first step to find out if a microaggression is taking place is by identifying the type of microaggression. According to Derald Wing, there are various

Rayamajhi 2 themes to which microaggression attach. Some of the common themes according to Wing are “Alien in one’s Own Land, Color Blindness, Myth of Meritocracy etc”. In making this comment, Wing urges us to identify the type of microaggression first. There are different ways of being victims of Microaggression. If we can identify the Microaggression, we might be able to discuss it.

The act of microaggression can really affect the victim psychologically. The victim feels unwanted and feeling or fear. In the book, Between the world and me, Coates illustrates, “We were laughing, but I know that we were afraid of those who loved us the most” (17). And Tori DeAngelis also agrees with this when she said “Respondents agreed that these backhanded communications can make them feel as if they don’t belong, that they are abnormal or that they are untrustworthy” in her article. The victim of the microaggression is sometimes mentally harmed a lot. Due to the continuous feeling of being rejected or isolated in many things, they feel unwanted. Due to the feeling of inferiority, they feel unsafe and afraid. They are afraid of losing their loved ones, afraid of the people who make them suffer.

The victim the microaggression should get united and work against it and try to make this invisible thing visible and then only we will be able to get rid of it. In Tori DeAngelis view, “Microaggression holds the power because they are invisible, and therefore they don’t allow us to see that our actions and attitudes may be discriminatory.”

The main reason Microaggression is existing in our society is because no one really cares Rayamajhi 3 about it. The whites think that people are making this topic a big issue since they are not the one suffering from this and therefore, the victims should unite, work for hand in hand to get rid of it.

The whites should be made feel that they are the one causing the microaggression and they should be aware of how badly they are still prevailing racism through microaggression. Tori DeAngelis agrees with this as she mentioned in her article, “It is a monumental task to get white people to realize that they are delivering microaggressions because it’s scary to them”. We should make the white people realize that they are delivering microaggressions to poor colored people. It is a hard task because they will probably not accept it since, this will affect their good, moral white image. If we will be able to make them realize then we can take away microaggression from its roots.

Microaggression is a major invisible problem of our society. Therefore, I would like to conclude by saying that it must be identified and discussed. And thus, we can get rid of microaggression only if the colored people get united and work against the whites and make the white people realize how they are delivering the microaggressions.
