Introduction

In the book minds of the future, Howard Gardner has put together a list of thoughtful ideas. These plans outline mentalities that will help people cope with a dynamic world. The current states of affairs are characterized by ever changing circumstances. It is hard to predict the future due to increasing amounts of information from different quarters. Gardner puts forward five minds. The minds have little to do with natural competencies of a person but much to do with mental capacities people can train on to improve their ways of thinking (Gardner, 2009). The book makes us to seek to know the manner in which we can put our minds to the best use. Gardner gives various explanations ranging from personal growth to adaptive mechanisms. He describes their use as not for personal growth but for the purposes of accomplishing success. The essay discusses the messages in the book, my take on his writing, and also how I can use the words to realize advantages the author explains.

Overview and Messages

The mind indeed matters a lot. In the book, the author holds that the mind is the most valuable tool we can use to accomplish great things. We only have to realize the best ways of thinking. The ways of processing information need not be inflexible but should change to accommodate new thoughts for the purposes of attaining important goals in commercial endeavors as well as our career paths. In the book, Gardner outlines the mental acuity that will enable us to become competitive in the present and future. They include a disciplined mind, the processing mind, the innovative mind, the reverent mind, and the ethical sound mind (Gardner, 2009). All of these minds ought to work together so as to derive their full benefits.

The author gives illustrations of the disciplined mind through an account of a famous piano expert from Poland. He talks of the entertainer as spending his life from childhood to adulthood training on how to play the piano. His efforts to train the mind bear fruit as the piano player becomes one of the best in his generation (Gardner, 2009). However, the artist reaches a point where he stops practicing and later relinquishes expertise in the field. Gardner uses this example to portray his idea that daily practice helps individuals to stand out from others who ply the same trade.

The author goes ahead to give the message that it is easy for people to discover experts. He uses the same pianist who states that the moment a day passes without doing some practice; it comes to his attention that he loses some ability. In case he goes for a couple of days without practice, the band he worked with noticed. Finally, whenever he stayed for more than two days without practice, everyone noticed a decrease in ability to play the piano well (Gardner, 2009). The writer simply reinforces his idea that practice is necessary to sustain expertise.

The author takes a turn on the merits of practice and gives a harsh reality that the world sometimes punishes outstanding minds. He explains that when a person becomes excellent there are people who nurture hostility (Gardner, 2009). The same people tend to work against growing expertise. The writer uses the famous Galilee Galileo who was jailed for introducing the noble idea that the world is round. The message is relevant as many people, who fail to accomplish certain milestones, tend to hate those who easily achieve them as they cannot live with an inferiority complex.

The author also gives an important message under the road ahead of people seeking to become experts. He explains that people ought to incorporate information from different fields, try to partake their duties to humanity, and develop reverent way of processing ideas (Gardner, 2009). I agree with this idea because we have to expect all sorts of future outcomes and prepare for them so as to tackle them effectively.

Critique of the Messages

The Disciplined Mind

Under the disciplined mind, Gardner (2009) holds that concentrating in one field and practicing is required to improve future competence. Ideas on the disciplined mind are partly untrue. As we move into the future, the information overload forces us to learn different disciplines to become more competent. For example, an actuarial Science student will find it necessary to learn IT because of the merits of combining the courses.

The Synthesizing Mind

According to Gardner (2009) the synthesizing mind draws information from different quarters to come up with new ideas. These are ideas are for personal use and can also be passed on to other people. However, the manner through which a person links one idea to another is based on personal judgment. The more a person invades more spheres, the more a synthesized idea becomes accurate. The synthesizing mind, therefore, negates the disciplined mind in that aspect.

The creative mind

According to Gardner (2009) the creative mind is able to use current knowledge to come up with novel ideas. Many would agree with him for admitting that the creative mind is not always admired by giving the example of Galilee Galileo. However, he should have also pointed out that creativity encourages people to work alone. As education becomes increasingly globalized, creativity works against similar ways of thinking.

The respectful Mind

The respectful mind is one that attempts to entitle people to their own opinions (Gardner, 2009). It is more concerned with relationships and ideally support that people in all disciplines should be considered equal. Many, however, disagree as it creates a situation where cognitive functions no longer dictate affairs. Instead, beliefs and preexisting social paradigms dictate progress in various disciplines.

The Ethical Mind

The Ethical Mind, according to Gardner (2009) encourages people to fulfill their responsibilities to humanity. However, just like the respectful mind, the ethical mind is too much reliant on relationships between people. People have more than one responsibility. The ethical mind is an abstract concept and the society expects people to apply it in entirety.

My Take from the Book

I believe that people must concentrate in one area and practice to do all that pertains to it in the best way possible. On the message about a mind which is disciplined, the author states that it must have trained on more than a single method of processing thoughts, a unique way that distinguishes people’s expertise in a particular field (Gardner, 2009). I agree because it is common knowledge that a person who chooses to concentrate in one area finally gains greater understanding that will separate them from other people in the same profession. Whether a person is a chef or a lecturer, I understand that everyone must train regularly to become the best professional. I fully embrace the idea of a mind that is disciplined as studies have found out that it takes a decade of concentrate efforts to become a full expert. If people have an understanding of what they intend to accomplish, they have to create time to practice.

The synthesizing and creating minds resonate with me the most. The author states that the synthesizing mind draws data from different fields, comprehends and analyses it rationally, and incorporates all the data for it and other people to draw sense from its output (Gardner, 2009). I am always aware that we live in an age where access to information is necessary for people seeking to advance their careers. Due to the presence of so much information, I always seek to increase my processing ability so as to make the best use of all relevant knowledge. The mind that creates is also another idea that resonates with me. The author states that the mind creates novel outcomes that are not conceivable by simplistic thinking. The same mind seeks to question why things are the way they are and in the process gets to know new things (Gardner, 2009). I resonate with these ideas because I always try to create new ideas from the ones that I already know.

From the book I learnt two important things that I think will help me accomplish the best in my profession. I summarize them under the respectful and Ethical minds. First the author talks of the respectful mind as one that perceives and accepts variations in different people and strives to cope with things that are not normal (Gardner, 2009). Just like Galileo’s case, I understand that people will not value you just by your expertise but how you interact with them. Many careers have been shattered due to failure of potential experts to revere important people. The same goes for an ethical mind. We need people to support us. Failure to perform our responsibilities to humanity could prove detrimental to career advancements.

Steps That I Can Take To Realize the Benefits of the Book

I think the best way to realize the best out of the book is to use the information to first improve myself. Just as (Gardner) 2009 propose I will use the book to accomplish my career. The next step will be to transform the world around me. I will try to discover what I really want to accomplish in my lifetime. I will conceive the ultimate goal in my life. I will then create a plan through which I will seek to improve my capabilities. Next, I will identify sources of information and evaluate the ones that are important to me. Not all information is useful and I will train my mind to filter the good information from other superfluous ones. I will then try at all times to be as rational as possible in the way I handle the information. Even though I already know that I have creativity in me, I will try to concentrate in creativity that has a positive impact on my career.

In addition, I will analyze the world around me as I interact with it to understand what people need from me and how they perceive me. I will seek to entitle people to their opinions in as much as I might think that mine are valid. Finally, pertaining to self improvement, I will seek to use a different me to try and help improve humanity. Just like Gardner (2009) puts it, as an expert, I find that it will be selfish to go for my goals only while ignoring that there people who need me. It will be only fair if I help people achieve their dreams. The ethical and respectful mind leads me to the idea of helping other people, especially children, to make the best of their minds. I will try to introduce the ideas through learning centers so as to help nurture individuals who will grow up with a purpose in life.

I will always to try to seek a mind that is discipline through the use of ideas put forward by Gardner. I will discover substantial and important areas of study or ideas under a particular discipline. An example of particular topics I will choose could be the deduction of meanings in historical events I learn or a look at the forces of nature such as gravity. I will allow myself enough time to study particular concepts.  Reading with a single mindset might stifle my creativity and it is for this reason that I will reread the topic so as to comprehend ideas from a different perspective.

Conclusion

The ideas in 5 minds for the future are well applicable in everyday life. The book is a valuable source for people who struggle to find a purpose in life. The author tries to tell us that we can get lost in the information world easily but mental concentration and practice in a particular field is indispensable. The five mental abilities are indeed form a manual to future survival.

The book ‘The Day the Cowboys Quit’ is a book written by Elmer Kelton that describes a strike that happened at Old Tascosa in the Texas Panhandle in 1883. The story is set against the background of the great Canadian River Cowboy strike of the 1883. This book is crucial to a reader by giving a benefit of thought of what was happening at this period. The book also brings forth the complexity and excitement of the main character in the story, Hugh Hitchcock. In addition, the book has an interest in describing a specific interest inside changing dynamic from the new West. The book represent on how cattle ranching was used by corporations and syndicates to make profits out of the cowboys. As reader goes through the book, elements of complexities in making both great and damaging choices will be seen mostly from the main character, Hitchcock. General review

The tale in ‘The day the Cowboys Quit’ is a true event that happened in the Texas Panhandle in 1883. The strike that is happening at this time by the cowboys was initially precipitated by activities that happened before in regarding the relationship between the rancher owners and the cowboys themselves. Elmer Kelton describes the cowboys as honest and true men who worked diligently to the ranch owners. Before even the strike was planned, the cowboys had the opportunity to own some cattle of which they had a huge turnover from them as they controlled cattle farming inside the American West. The rancher owners allowed cowboys to own cattle because they knew that cowboy’s job was a hard one, and there was a need to give bonuses to those who exemplified hard work and diligence (Kelton 54). In addition, the cowboys had the chance to own horses on their own. The cowboys also enjoyed the privileges of changing their owner’s brands to their own brand. However, these cowboys soon discovered that the ranch owners were not happy with the fact that they owned cattle. The source of the problem can be attributed to three men: the old time land rancher, the big rancher manager and Hitchcock who is seen trying to accumulate the most cattle. All these men have one thing in common: greed. The story goes that the ranch owners and managers were bitter with the cowboys as the cowboys managed more in the farming industry (Kelton 112). They therefore devised way of coming with laws to counteract this trend. . This is what made the cowboys angry and plotted a strike to deal with the cattle owners. The ranch owners started viewing the cowboys as pieces of larger puzzle of the ranch and not as people of worth and value. However, not all ranch owners were against the cowboys on owning the cattle. For instance, Charlie, a ranch owner, differed to Selkirk by arguing that the cowboys were good people, and there was no reason whatsoever to deny them these privileges. However, his position was changed immediately when Hitchcock informed him that Law, (hitch friend who is also a cowboy), stole his (hitch) cattle.

In the beginning, the cowboys were not very determined about the strike, but as time progressed, emotions and felling became increased in severity. Some cowboys were not interested in engaging in the strike, for instance, Hitch, working under Charlie, was against the strike. During all time, Hitchcock was an undercover to the other cowboys, and became its unofficial leader. As the leader of the group, Hitchcock proposed that the ranch owner (Charlie) to pay them fifty dollars a month and send each proposal to other rancher. However, this proposal was ignored as Serkik refused to receive the statement on payments (Kelton 145). This made the cowboys to become weaker and weaker as food issue became a problem. Problems were heightened when some strikers started leaving the group. In fact, Hitch himself decided to leave the group and become a small rancher. Later, Hitchcock was advised a fellow cowboy that Charlie was going to have the smaller brands declared illegal. Therefore, to act responsively on this statement, Hitch drove his cattle across the county line, but he was hit and his cattle were taken away. The spirit of rebellion was now rejuvenated in Hitch and as a result devised ways on how to get his herd of cattle back.

During this activities in searching his stolen cattle, Hitch was informed by a fellow cowboy that Law was about to be hanged by ranch owners for being found stealing cattle. He quickly sets to rescue his friend but found that Law had been already lynched by the time he arrived at the ranch. He opted to get assistance from sheriff who he found out that he had already quitted. The course of the strike changed by Hitch starting to campaign for the sheriff and as a matter of surprise he successfully won. He was now determined to avenge the death of Law, and consequently, he warranted for murder for person who hanged Law. However, his motive to punish the murderer was not meet as the jury listening to the murder case of Law had different opinion (Kelton 167). In the ‘court room’, one judge told Hitch that a retrial would of wasting time in getting justice to law, but reinforced Hitch’s statement that no vigilance justice would be tolerated. Revenge was manifested in the courtroom when Rascal (Serkirk’ cowboy) short Dodge, the new Sherriff, because his boss had not paid him what he owned him.

While Hitch is trying his best to evade new rules, the ranchers on the other hand are devising a strategic way to silence the strikers without using force. The officials of the ranchers started firing the cowboys on the spot. The rancher owners started luring the strikers to accept a slight increase in wages and fired those who declined the offer. To demonstrate that they were serious, the rancher owners continued with roundup plans by hiring replacement workers at temporarily increased wages (Kelton 234).The strike was now deeming to cease, as most of the replacement workers were actually the strikers who asked their respective bosses to resume work. In two months tome, the strike was much weakened due to many roundups occurred without incidents. Lack of enthusiasm and poor organization led the strike to finally fizzle out of its mission. It is observed that many cowboys went back to their actual stations while others drifted and got work at the less regulated outfits that still reigned farther to the south. The book ends dramatically with the workers left under the mercy of those who had earlier stripped their way of life

Smith was one of the writers of the 20th century who were the pioneers in shedding light on how the economic system operates in wealth creation in any particular environment. By the 20th century, the three main options that were available to for a country to organize themselves were communism, the free market, and the mixed market economies (Smith, 2014). Among these options, the free market was the most prevalent system. However, the great depression of 1930s, the two world wars, and the vast gulf between the rich and the poor are some of the factors that made people lose faith in the free market system. However, China and Russia decided to embrace communism as opposed to the free market and mixed market system. The shortcoming of communism is that it becomes too complicated, since it becomes hard to be organized by the central authority when it grows large (Allen, 2011). However, mixed market economy becomes attractive from the sense that it can easily be organized by the central authority and there is no limit by which the market can grow. In addition, the free market system makes it possible to process large volumes of information that can effectively be used by the central authority to manage and grow their economy from all the sectors. According to Smith (2011), the mixed economy developed in Britain was problematic in the sense that people could not easily innovate and create wealth. Therefore, the living standards deteriorated and people began to protest and demonstrate against the government. Similarly, the mixed economy practiced in the United States became complex and costly to implement due to high taxation and slow means of operations. Due to complexity and problems that came with the mixed economy and communism, most countries were left with no option but to practice free market system. However, the free market system has been accused of widening the gap between the rich and the poor as is suspected to be one of the causes of the great depression and the First World War.

In his book The Wealth of Nations, Smith disputes the common belief that natural resources are the common factor responsible for creating the wealth of a country. Smith argues his case by purporting that not all nations with abundant natural resources are rich and not all countries that lack natural resources are poor. Therefore, natural resources by themselves do not create wealth and neither are they necessary for sustainable wealth creation. Since natural resources are not responsible for wealth creation in a country, Smith argues that trade is responsible for wealth creation. According to Smith (2014), trade is responsible for wealth creation through voluntary buying and selling between two parties. Through this exchange, both sides benefit in that their welfare is increased. What hold good at the level of individuals also holds good at the level of the companies since trade increases the welfare of both participants, whether they are individuals or entire nation.

With regards to the highly adopted free market system, Smith asserts that there exists an invisible hand that determines how it operates. According to Smith, this invisible and is perhaps the hand of God. The Godly invisible hand of the free market system automatically tunes people to operate with the benefit of others. The visible market in the free system may be misleading but it gives some insights on how the system operates. In this case, a trader will employ the most appropriate resources to produce the goods and services needed by their customers (Smith, 2014). Therefore, all businesses tend to produce high quality goods and services needed by their clients as they attempt to increase their sales. In return, the buyers will be able to receive high quality services at competitive prices. Consequently, people will tend to buy more of what they need, leading to wealth creation at the individual level and national level. The public will thus be able to receive high quality goods and services motivated by their own self-interest. According to Smith, free market support free choices that are supported by an invisible hand to bring about the use of resources and natural skills with the aim of supporting the whole community. Free market also enables people to work in an area of natural advantage by choosing what suits his lifestyle. Smith is of the view that the invisible hand of the free market ensures that resource and talents are utilized in a manner that brings maximum at the individual level and national level. These choices that are freely made at a personal level through the invisible hand maximize the use of human skills and natural resources.

In his book, The Wealth of Nations, Smith highlights the critical role played by the government in developing its economy. The statesman, through his authority, would give directions that should be followed as they employ the capital in producing various goods and services. The government, through its bureaucratic channels controls the millions of free players in the market. However, the government is not in a position to make millions of decisions that affect individual businesses in different parts of the country. In a situation whereby the government is allowed to make decisions for millions of ingle businesses, the decision making would be slow and the quality of goods will be reduced. According to Smith (2014), the government is in charge of gathering all the relevant information and issue instructions in accordance with the gathered information. The role of the government in this case is to provide an enabling environment for all individuals and company to carry out their mandate. However, Smith was very much concerned that a government endowed with so much private responsibility in a free market would be unrealistic. He argues that it would be dangerous to the citizens of a state to hand so much power to the government, as it would derail their effectiveness. In order to provide enabling environment in a free market, Smith believed that the government should protect the country from external attack, provide and enforce the legal framework, and provide the necessary infrastructure for businesses to occur. In providing the legal framework for businesses, the government ought to pass necessary legislation that protects businesses from exploitation and to punish the wrongdoers. Such a government is expected to supply a judicial system of courts, magistrates, and prisons. By taking a look at Kate Chopin’s novel At Fault, the reader is tempted to ask what the American spirit is. Despite the existence of several differences in the manner in which individuals speak or look, these people happen to share characteristics and traits that represent the aspect of Americanism in a perfect way. In the novel “At Fault” by Kate Chopin, there exist several great examples of characters or individuals who exhibit the spirit of American. By taking a look beyond the main lot and surface, Theresa Lafirme happens to be among the characters who display the American spirit in Chopin’s novel. In this novel, Theresa symbolizes and portrays what the American spirit encompasses. Besides, this character plays a vital role in revealing what the American spirit has transformed her into despite of her descent, which is Creole. Theresa displays a unique sense or aspect of women’s independence and entrepreneurship. Moreover, this character demonstrates a rare aspect of motivation to excel and the liberty to express her emotion and love. In the subsequent paragraphs, the American spirit of Theresa will be elaborated via literary elements, which are present throughout Chopin’s novel such as motivation, setting, and protagonist. In the 19th century, the way of life of Americans in the South cannot be elaborated better than by focusing on the setting surrounding the life of Theresa Lafirme (Russell 11).

The setting occurs during the post-reconstruction America in the late 19th century in Northwestern Louisiana that is featured as the old South. The subsequent involves an excerpt from the novel that elaborates the old southern landscape’s setting with combination of modernization. This idea is evident in Chopin’s statement:

In this novel, Theresa is seen to portray unique sense of independence. This character demonstrates a high level of liberty in terms of thinking. Chopin argues that Theresa had an independence of thought, which was exceptional when viewed from the perspective of her life alongside its surrounding conditions. This form of thinking is perfect reflection of the true American spirit as it allows an individual to make decisions that are based on personal views as opposed to ideas of others. Theresa’s independence of mind or through was evident in her reactions to life issues such as divorce. For instance, Chopin claims that Theresa could refuse to answer any question about divorces as it was beyond her level (Chopin 32). This statement provides a clear revelation that Theresa’s opinions were not meant to please any one as she spoke what she felt was right. In relation to this, Theresa portrays the American spirit, which is vital for one’s survival. Moreover, the aspect of Theresa’s independence is revealed in the author’s statement that Theresa perceived divorce as a blessing. This statement happens to contradict the thinking of many women who fear the issue of divorce. In several occasions, most of the divorced women always think of it as the end of their happy lives. On the other hand, Theresa happens to view divorce an opportunity for the woman to better her life. Therefore, the social and cultural influences seem to have not affected the thinking of Theresa. Besides, Theresa is depicted to be independent from social influence in the scene where she talks to Homer about catholic religion. In this scene, Theresa made it clear to Homer that religion did not influence her reasoning on being married to him (Russell 18). As a character with the American spirit, Theresa believes that a woman can make it in life despite being divorced from her husband. As such, this character reflects the American spirit, which is based on independence.  Besides, it is striking to note that Theresa has developed this independence despite living in a harsh condition.

Theresa demonstrates the American Spirit by exhibiting the freedom to express her emotions and love. Despite being a woman who is strict in her views and principles, Theresa manages to display her other side, which is characterized by emotions and love. In chapter 1.7 of the novel, Theresa’s ability to express emotion and love is shown when she communicates to Mr. Homer about his past marriage life. At the start of their conversation, Theresa is seen to be strict and unable to listen to Mr. Homer’s opinion about marrying her. Theresa’s harshness was caused by her realization that Mr. Homer was divorced and eve condemned Mr. Homer’s action as cowardly. By challenging the actions of Mr. Homer, Theresa desires to ensure the absolute necessity of Mr. Homer’s divorce to his wife.  However, as the two continued to talk, Theresa opened up to the discussion and even asked Mr. Homer to tell about his past. Her ability to express love and emotions is shown when she tells Mr. Homer that she could not judge him for telling her about his past marriage life (Chopin 43). Besides, Theresa’s caring nature is shown when pleads with Mr. Homer to correct his mistake by re-marrying his wife and attempting to reform her mistakes. In relation to this, most of Theresa’s reaction to Mr. Homer can be taken as her comprehension of what it could imply for their positions to be interchanged or reversed. Towards the end of their conversation Theresa is seen to fall in love with Mr. Homer. This observation also signifies irony as the readers does not expect Theresa to fall in love with Mr. Homer in relation to her reaction at the start of their conversation.

As a character with the American spirit, Theresa possesses a robust sense of motivation to excel in life. In the novel, Chopin proves this statement by claiming that Theresa had not attained the age of thirty-five without realizing the life presents several hindrances, which should be embraced whether with the heartlessness or of philosophy, the dignity of self-respect or the revolt of weakness. In relation to this, Theresa is revealed as a character that is prepared to face the challenges of life in many ways. This is the American spirit which is vital for one’s survival life. Theresa represents the American spirit, which is ready to face the hurdles of life as they come and emerge successful. Theresa’s willingness to overcome her life’s challenges is shown when she turns down Mr. Homer’s marriage proposal to her (Russell 13). She does this regardless of what might befall her as she is prepared to handle the outcomes of her actions. As such, Theresa demonstrates the American spirit of standing for what is right regardless of the outcomes of such a stand. It is ironical to see Theresa rejecting the marriage proposal of a person of Mr. Homer’s state. In the real sense, the reader expects Theresa to seize this opportunity and use it as means of excelling in life. However, Theresa fails to seize this chance and hopes to face life the hard way via her struggle. Chopin manages to reveal this by incorporating the aspect of imagery in that Theresa could not accept Mr. Homer’s proposal even at the price of happiness. Therefore, Theresa has an inborn motivation that an individual can excel in life without depending on other people. As such, this character succeeds in displaying the American spirit, which makes her uniquely American. Besides, Theresa manages to demonstrate the American spirit by being a successful entrepreneur (Russell 16). She succeeds in managing the plantation that she acquired from her husband.

In conclusion, in Kate Chopin’s novel “At Fault”, Theresa Lafirme acts as perfect representation of the unique American spirit. As one of the main characters in the novel, she manages to display the American spirit by being independent in her thoughts and actions, expressing her love and emotions freely, and demonstrating a high sense of motivation to excel in life despite facing several challenges. These aspects make this character uniquely American in the novel.

It may be easier to handle to critique of a book if you examine the different aspects of the book and pass your judgment on each aspect separately. Your
critical commentary should focus on the following aspects:

  • Subject matter: describe the range of topics in the book and determine whether it is adequate and relevant. This may also help you pass judgment on the length of the book. Examine the organization of the topics and determine whether the sequence is appropriate.

  • Restate the thesis you included in the introduction.
