This is an argument of definition essay. An essay as this seeks to make an argument that hinges on the specific definition of a term. This assignment will be writing an essay in which you seek to argue a claim based entirely upon the definition of a certain concept. You may argue your opinion on how a definition has changed over time OR how a definition is commonly misinterpreted OR that something should or should not be defined in a certain way. This essay is a clear argument that should remain focused on the definition of 1 or more words or concepts and how well you make that definition relate to the larger scope of your argument.

5) Use 3rd person present tense – no personal pronouns.

Description of the Event
This section can function as the introduction to the essay. Only the specific disaster should be described here rather than describing the generalities of the hazard. For example, in an essay on the Haiti earthquake, it is not necessary to include information on general aspects of earthquakes in this section (i.e. why subduction zones are associated with earthquakes).
Causes
In this section, you can address the event from the general to the specific (i.e. a discussion of what causes that type of disaster and then focusing specifically on the cause of your case study).
Impacts
Describe the impacts of the event. These could include social, economic, and/or environmental impacts.
Response
Describe the reaction to the specific disaster. Were there proactive responses to the hazard in place or were they more commonly reactive?
Recovery
What has changed since the disaster? Have new policies or regulations been developed?
Provide a description of the resiliency of the local area.
Suggestions
Reflect on what further work has been suggested as well as your own thoughts about what needs to be completed to protect people and property from a similar event in the future.
Formatting

– The text of the essay should be 5 to 6 pages in length (text does not include figures, maps, graphs, images, the title page, or the bibliography)

However, you will need to make reference to empirical materials and when you do it is necessary to use them appropriately – i.e., demonstrating where and how they relate to your overall argument.
d. ability to draw appropriate implications from positions advanced. This means showing where and how your argument relates to the question posed – i.e., how the points you have made individually or together lead to a conclusion that supports your overall argument/thesis. Think of this as a kind of sign-posting: telling the reader where you are in the argument and how the point just made relates to your overall thesis.
e. the coherence of the conclusion with the overall argument. Your essay must contain a conclusion. The conclusion should follow logically from your argument – put another way, in your introduction you should state your thesis/argument; in the body of your essay you should develop your argument – i.e., show to the reader the reasoning process you have gone through that leads you to the position you hold, i.e., your thesis; and in the conclusion re-state your position and, if appropriate, draw out any wider implications it might have.
