3. I found Guideline 2 to be significantly relevant to the case study. It states that we must aspire to recognize and understand [differences in beliefs which] can influence [our] perceptions of and interactions with others (APA, 2002). This seemed particularly applicable as it related to the statistical analysis of why (reasons) mothers create neonaticide and Jane’s potential cultural motivation based on her perception of how her parents would react to her pregnancy. The case study made it fairly clear that the investigation targeted Jane as malicious in intent and the cultural differences were not considered. We learned later in the case study that Jane had legitimate concerns about how her parents would perceive her and the pregnancy which could have added significant stress towards a strained psyche and any potential mental disorder. From a different culture, we (myself included) may not have considered how influential this could be.

Guideline 3 requires that psychologists consider and attempt to understand how language and communication differences can have significant impacts on interactions and we must consider both our own language is unique elements and that of the individual(s) we interact with (APA, 2002). This was violated in the case study and something I realized early on before the case study addressed it directly. Janeís ability to communicate was poor at best and the lack of a translator severely impacted the interviews with her. Speaking from experience, if you are learning or new to a language, you know broad and blunt phrases and words. Common words usually come first, and grammar and the ability to articulate complex thoughts come latter. I have taken Russian and German, my native language is English, and trying to make sense of these other languages is like speaking like a caveman. Not only can languages convey very different meanings for the same idea or multiple meanings for a word, but the lack of ability to speak a common language significantly impacts true communication…

Egalitarian Ethics evaluates communication by the criterion of equality.

The central question is have the conditions produced by the communication enhanced or hindered equal treatment for the individuals who are affected by it?î

Egalitarians discuss their position in contrast to two other kinds of ethics:

  1. Egoistic ethics which asks the question, is the outcome good (or positive, or helpful, or gratifying) for the person doing the evaluating.
  2. Altruistic ethics which is the ethic of unselfishness (choice is for the best of the other(s) without considering the needs or wants of the self)

Egalitarians theorize that human affairs are better served by an ethic that prevents the weaker or less protected members of society from being taken advantage of by stronger members.

The Philosophy of Egalitarianism

Egalitarians pose the question, do all have equal access to communication, information, channels, and interpretations that keep society viable?î

John Rawls – contemporary philosopher.  In a theory of Justice (1971) he develops metaphorically a criterion called the veil of ignorance which communicator may use to evaluate their social acts.

The Philosophy of Egalitarianism

When considering how to act or speak toward others; Rawls’s theory of justice requires individuals who are self-interested in a particular social outcome to place their acts on one side of a metaphorical curtain and everyone else who could possibly be affected on the other side including themselves), regardless of race, class, gender, power, or other distinctions.

Rawls suggests that ethical communicators who are about to make a decision should remove themselves mentally from their actual circumstances in order to enter a hypothetical reality (behind the veil) from which they are as likely to emerge weak and dependent as powerful and independent.

Decisions made on one side of the veil of ignorance therefore could not take such distinctions or the biases arising from them into account.  Subsequent communication decisions would potentially influence all parties equally and fairly, and justice would be the theoretical result.

As a Rawlsian egalitarian, you’d have to place that friendship on the other side of the veil and make the ethical decision on how to communicate without resource to either the fact of the friendship or your egoistic desire to maintain it.  The social fact of friendship would have no fundamental relevance to the ethical decision.

The Philosophy of Egalitarianism

The right thing has more to do with maintaining a just or fair social community than it does with maintaining social privileges or special information such as who are friends and who aren’t.  Such dimensions should not be critical in ethical decision making in this view.

Although the deontological, teleological and egalitarian theories of ethics are only generalizations that summarize complex systems of philosophical thought in ethics, they provide a background for our survey of ethical systems with more specific application to communication theory.

The study of ethics does not tell you what to do but instead presents a framework that can be used to study the ethical dimensions of various issues. An approach that is commonly applied in the area of business decision making is referred to as stakeholder analysis.

In stakeholder analysis, a business decision maker is asked to consider a broad set of constituencies in making business decisions.

Instead of focusing only on shareholders and maximizing shareholder wealth, management is encouraged to consider both the moral and social implications of their decisions in terms of how the decisions affect all stakeholders of the company.

Ethical Issues Analysis Framework

This broader set of stakeholders includes shareholders as well as employees, suppliers, customers, the local community, and any other party that might be affected by the decision.

Why worry about these additional stakeholders? For one reason, it will help you develop a more complete analysis of the decision, not just the impact on the immediate parties.

In the case above, Gamble appears to be focused on the profits of the company and keeping his and his staff’s jobs.

A more thorough stakeholder analysis might suggest that misstating the amortization expense could lead to lack of confidence in Shield’s financial reports, that if detected, could lead to a higher cost of capital and maybe even fines or other penalties. In the long run, Gamble, his staff, and other employees could lose their jobs in this scenario.

Specific Analysis Steps

Here are some specific stakeholder analysis steps that you can apply in the process of ethical awareness and decision-making:

Recognize an ethical situation or ethical dilemma. The first step is to know when you have a problem. To do that, you must develop your own personal ethics or conscience.

Your ethics are a subset of society’s values. They come from family, educational, and religious institutions as well as from social movements and from your own reactions to all of these inputs. Being sensitive to and aware of the effects (potential harm or benefit) of one’s actions and decisions on individuals or groups is a first step in resolving ethical dilemmas.

Move toward an ethical resolution by identifying and analyzing the principal elements in the situation. Seek answers to the following questions in this sequence:

  1. What parties (stakeholders) may be harmed or benefited?
  2. Whose rights or claims may be violated?
  3. Which specific interests are in conflict?
  4. What are my responsibilities and obligations?

These questions should help you identify and sort out the facts.
