Ethical, Moral, and Legal Leadership

To prepare:

Consider the examples of leadership demonstrated in this week’s media presentation and the other Learning Resources.

To further your self-knowledge, you are required to complete the Kiersey Temperament as indicated in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider your leadership style, including your strengths for leading others and include your results from Kiersey

Temperament Sorter to describe potential challenges related to your leadership style.

Mentally survey your work environment, or one with which you are familiar, and identify a timely issue/dilemma that requires you to perform the leadership role of moral agent or advocate to improve a situation (e.g., speaking or acting on behalf of a vulnerable patient, the need for appropriate staffing, a colleague being treated unfairly).

What ethical, moral, or legal skills, dispositions, and/or strategies would help you resolve this dilemma? Define the differences between ethical, moral, and legal leadership.

Finally, consider the values and principles that guide the nursing profession; the organization’s mission, vision, and values; the leadership and management competencies addressed in this course; and your own values and reasons for entering the profession. What motivation do you see for taking a stand on an important issue even when it is difficult to do so?

To complete:

Write a 4 to 5 page paper (page count does not include title and reference page) that addresses the following:

  • Introduce the conceptual frameworks of the ethical constructs of ethics, moral, or legal standards and the purpose of the paper.
  • Consider an ethical, moral, or legal dilemma that you have encountered in your work environment and describe it.
  • Analyze the moral, ethical, and legal implications utilized in this situation. Describe your role as a moral agent or advocate for this specific issue.
  • Consider your leadership styles identified by your self-assessment and determine if they act as a barrier or facilitation during this dilemma.

Watch the full documentary and write a 1-page essay about:

What was the management failures in the 75th precinct that contributed to Michael Dowd’s Actions? Here is a documentary about an extraordinary episode of outrageous corruption among New York police in the 1980s; a sort of real-life counterpart to A Most Violent Year, but without any of the machinations of drama, and a hundred times more appalling. The backdrop is the chaos-driven New York of recent myth: the bankrupt city swamped by a tide of crack cocaine and violence, with big-money gangsters ruling the streets and honest folk too terrified to step outside their doors.

Do you believe that the atheist is successful in showing that the existence of evil is incompatible with the existence of God? Why (not)? Support your view with reasons.

In your essay, you must address all of the following points:

Distinction between Moral and Natural Evil

(a) Carefully and methodically (but in your words) explain how the atheist argues that God does not exist because evil exists. Be sure to explain the positions of theism, atheism, and agnosticism. Be sure to explain how the various qualities attributed to God in the Judeo-Christian tradition bear on the problem.

(b) State your thesis (answer to the title question).

(c) Explain the distinction between moral and natural evil. Give some examples.

(d) Carefully explain the free will defense. Make sure that you say what type of evil the defense is concerned with. Take care to explain why a world with free beings in it, who might cause evil, is better than a world with unfree beings who always do good. You should explain the philosophical objections that have been raised against the free will defense (among them Mackie’s argument).

Distinction between Moral and Natural Evil

You should also evaluate them. Do you think that they are good objections? Do they undermine the free will defense?

(e) Carefully explain the soul-making defense. Make sure that you say what type of evil defense is concerned with. What philosophical objections have been raised against the soul-making defense? Do you think that they are good objections? Do they undermine the soul-making defense?
