Canadian Residential School History focuses on the history of Indigenous representation in Canada. Students have the opportunity to engage with texts, films, articles, photographs, etc. that either represent Indigenous peoples or consider how they have been represented through images.

Students will then consider the ways in which the image(s)/texts compare/relate to Jeff Lemire’s images from Secret Path (a new text, published 2016) with respect to the representation of Indigenous people and their culture(s).

To be clear, you will need to construct an argument about Secret Path; this book will be the focus of your essay. You will consider the ways in which it fits within, or rejects, the tradition of indigenous representation. Is, for example, a graphic novel a powerful medium through which to confront reconciliation? Does the text subvert earlier assumptions about Indigenous people, allowing us to see Indigenous culture through a new lens? Or, does the text make use of similar stereotypes that you have discovered in your research? Does the fact that this book is written by white men matter? Why, or why not?

In order to answer questions such as these (questions that could formulate a strong thesis), you must study images of Indigenous peoples in Canada and contrast and compare them with the images from Secret Path. It will be your choice if you choose to focus solely on the images of Secret Path or to include an analysis of the music that accompanies it (a download for the accompanying music, written and performed by Gord Downie, is located at the back of each book). Keep in mind that considering the music will offer an accompanying narrative that may well contribute to your reading and/or understanding of the images. This, in itself, would be an interesting topic to consider.

This is a formal essay; it will have an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, the main body, a conclusion, and works cited page. This essay should have a word count of at least 1700 (not exceeding 2000). This is a research assignment where quotations & images from both primary and secondary sources must be used and referenced using MLA (Modern Language Association) format. Although I will be teaching you the basic rules of MLA formatting, please know that copies of the MLA handbook can be found in the reference section of the library and are also accessible online. Learning to use MLA properly helps to avoid the serious offense of plagiarism: the borrowing/use of ANY idea from another source MUST be referenced accordingly. Please avoid using online sources unless you clear them with me; ebooks, journals articles and online encyclopedic entries found using MRU databases, ARE acceptable. Your essay will make use of at least FIVE other sources, all of which I’ll find on your works cited page, in addition to Secret Path. I should find a minimum of six images in your essay.

I have arranged a library session for your class. We’ll be meeting in a computer lab on the main floor of the library. our librarian will be teaching you how to research for reputable sources. She will also spend time talking about MLA and documenting sources. The dates for this session are located on your syllabus.

Your research essays should be well edited. We will spend time discussing the mechanics of writing; I am looking for essays free from careless errors. Students should consider visiting Student Learning Services where they will provide you with invaluable support as you plan and revise your papers. I’ll be talking more about this in class; there are links found in the announcement section of your Blackboard page.

Paper Contents/Structure:

The introductory paragraph must contain an argument (thesis). Although this seems to be an informative paper, it still must have a point. For instance, “The life of a typical Mexican woman during the colonial period in America was exceptionally challenging. Through the scrutiny of the concept of the cult of domesticity, Manifest Destiny, and the Greaser Law it becomes apparent that Mexican women faced a multitude of oppression much like her African American counterpart that still intimately defines her position in society today.”

Next, you would begin to construct your “colonial identity” in first person. You would introduce yourself, how you came to the colonies (this is what we call “historical fiction,” of course I am not expecting you to know that you came on the Mayflower and landed on Plymouth, but rather, based on your racial/ethnic identity, what would have your point of entry have been?) I understand that some groups will have a challenge finding a point of entry, for instance, in my case, very few Vietnamese would have been in colonial America. I would use as a reference point the entry of the Chinese. In my research I found that in 1834 the first Chinese woman Julia Foochee ching-chang king (Afong Moy) came to the United States. I would then use the Chinese experience to inform how a person like myself would experience life in the US. It might help to write your paper as a series of letters or journal entries.

What do you do for a living? What challenges do you face in the colonies? What advantages if any? How are you treated?

Third, I want you to then befriend another person that differs from your racial identity and explain their situation and life in the colonies. You would then research 3-5 laws, court cases, customs, and social practices that apply to your friend. They cannot be the same laws that you have used for yourself. Fourth, I want you to situate yourself in a major historical event and explain your perspective or role. For instance, if you are Native, how would you have reacted to the Indian Removal Act of 1830?
Last, I want you to reflect on your current identity and your life in the United States? How has the legacy of the experience of a person like yourself in colonial America impact your experiences today? What have you learned from your research?

Remember, I want you to be creative, but I need to see that you have done your research. You need to identify and explain laws, court cases, and social customs. Your historical event should also explain the significance and impact it had in history. Although you are making up the story, the facts are real. I need you to include at least 3 sources and a works cited or bibliography. Please use academic sources, Wikipedia, info please, and similar sites or blogs are not academic. You can use your text book, but they will not be counted towards the three sources. You need to cite within the body of your paper whenever you mention information that the average person does not commonly known. A good rule of thumb is whenever you cite a law, court cases, or custom, there should be a citation that follows. This also applies to details of your historical event. Be mindful: a paper without in-text citation will be given a zero with no opportunity to rewrite for a higher grade. When in doubt, ask.

3. BODY -4-9. Discuss her major contribution to the movement from the earlier stages to when her activism became more developed and pronounced. Be sure to analyze the contributions in spite of the ramifications. These paragraphs will be the MEAT OF YOUR ANALYSIS, so be sure to give them your full attention. Towards the end of the body you can mention when her work declined. At the very end, you should also include her death, and transition by mentioning that her legacy and contributions live on even today.
4. BODY PARAGRAPH 10-11. Focus on her impact and long lasting legacy. We continue to benefit from her activism, and so will people from generations to come.
5. BODY PARAGRAPH 12-13: CONCLUSION. Reiterate her importance and impact (not in the same words as the intro), and take your work to another trajectory.
